Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleNetflix’s hit teen drama Outer Banks has returned for its fifth and final season on August 20, 2026. After the devastating loss of ‘JJ,’ the Pogues reunite for one last treasure hunt that pushes them to their breaking point. Stranded and grieving, ‘John B,’ ‘Sarah,’ ‘Kiara,’ ‘Pope,’ ‘Cleo,’ and even ‘Rafe’ face old enemies like ‘Chandler Groff’ while chasing the Blue Crown.
Promising revenge, danger, and closure, creators call this bittersweet finale the wild ride they always envisioned to end the saga. Since ‘JJ’ died at the end of Season 4, his character won’t return in the fifth season. But apart from him, there are a few more characters who won’t be a part of Season 5.
Every main cast member of Outer Banks who survived Season 4 returns for Season 5. ‘John B,’ ‘Pope,’ ‘Kiara,’ ‘Topper,’ ‘Sarah,’ ‘Rafe,’ ‘Cleo,’ and ‘Sofia’ are all back to deal with how ‘JJ’s’ death impacts them. A couple of recurring Outer Banks characters will also have bigger roles in Season 5. ‘Groff,’ played by J. Anthony Crane, and ‘Deputy Shoupe,’ played by Cullen Moss, have both been promoted to series regulars. However, several notable characters from Season 4 won’t appear in the final season.
Because ‘JJ Maybank’ was murdered, Rudy Pankow will not be in Season 5. After Season 4, Pankow exited the show. He told Netflix’s Tudum in 2024 that he wanted to thank the cast and crew, calling it a pleasure to go to work and the biggest thing he had done so far. He added that getting this as his first major role was the start of a lifetime and that he would miss it.
While some fans hope Pankow might return in a flashback or other creative way, he is not confirmed to be coming back. Like ‘JJ,’ ‘Lightner,’ played by Rigo Sanchez, also died in the Season 4 finale. ‘Lightner’ was part of the Lupine Corsairs, a group of treasure hunters and mercenaries who opposed the Pogues. ‘Pope’ killed him in retaliation for ‘Lightner’ murdering ‘Captain Terrance,’ played by Terence Rosemore, who was like a father to ‘Pope’s’ girlfriend ‘Cleo.’
Although ‘Lightner’ won’t return for Season 5, Tudum reported that ‘Pope’s’ storyline will focus on the emotional aftermath of the killing, in addition to grieving ‘JJ.’ ‘JJ’ was not ‘Groff’s’ only Season 4 victim. He also killed ‘Omar,’ a Lupine Corsair he had worked with earlier in the season. ‘Omar’s’ body was found in the second episode of Season 4, but ‘Groff’ was not revealed as the killer until Episode 7. ‘Groff’ also murdered ‘Wes Genrette,’ played by David Jensen, the man who hired the Pogues to find ‘Blackbeard’s’ treasure.
Finally, ‘Groff’ shot and killed ‘Hollis Robinson,’ played by Brianna Brown, the real estate developer who was helping him fund the Goat Island project. As with his other victims, ‘Groff’ betrayed her, which further established him as a ruthless killer.
The Outer Banks series finale will follow the Pogues as they deal with ‘JJ’s’ loss in Morocco. With the group stranded far from home, they have also lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a series of familiar threats.
‘Chandler Groff,’ played by J. Anthony Crane, remains on the run, while ‘Dalia,’ played by Pollyanna McIntosh, and the Corsairs are closing in. At the same time, the Kooks are working to make sure the Pogues have no home to return to. Meanwhile, ‘John B,’ ‘Sarah,’ ‘Kiara,’ ‘Pope,’ and ‘Cleo’ will have to depend on their scrappy instincts and an uneasy alliance with ‘Rafe’ in order to avoid falling apart completely.
Season 5 will mark the final installment of the hit Netflix series. The creators, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, previously told Netflix’s Tudum that they were thrilled to be going on one last adventure with the Pogues. They said returning to set with the cast for this final round felt both bittersweet and surreal, and added that they were excited for viewers to see what was planned for the season, calling it a wild ride.
