Ajay Ahuja's contribution to the 1999 Kargil War was etched in the pages of history forever. His supreme sacrifice for the nation didn't go unrewarded, and he received the Vir Chakra after being martyred on May 27, 1999. The selfless squadron leader could carry out such dangerous operations due to the backing of a brave woman, his wife, Alka Ahuja. She supported his endeavours and looked after the household while he was away serving the nation.
Being the family member of an Air Force squadron leader was not an easy job for Alka Ahuja, but she did it out of her love for him. Alka largely lived a private life and also kept their child away from the spotlight. Nothing much is known about her personal and professional life except that she worked as a school teacher when her husband, Ajay Ahuja lost his life in the Kargil war. Alka's resilience and bravery are greatly respected, and she keeps her husband's memory and legacy alive through interviews.
Alka and Ajay reportedly had an arranged marriage, which was typical of that era. Alka was chosen by his parents, partly because she met one specific criterion set by Ajay regarding his future wife. He told his parents that he wanted a wife with an educational background in science or education (B.Sc or B.Ed). The reason for the same was that he wanted his spouse to be self-reliant and financially independent, as his air force career was filled with uncertainties and life risks.
Alka fit that criterion and got married to Ajay, following which they welcomed their only child, a son named Ankur Ahuja in circa 1992-93. Ankur was just six years old when he lost his father in May 1999. Since then, his mother, Alka, has served as both parents, and she raised him as a single mother. Alka efficiently balanced his role as a mother and a working woman. Ankur is in his 30s as of 2026, and nothing is known about his marital status or current endeavours.
Ajay Ahuja graduated from the National Defence Academy before being commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 1985. During the 14 years of his illustrious career, Ajay flew MiG-21 and MiG-23 aircraft, logged more than 1,000 hours as a flying instructor, and earned a reputation as a patient mentor and accomplished fighter pilot. During the Kargil War, Ajay Ahuja was the Flight Commander of No. 17 Squadron, known as the Golden Arrows.
On May 27, 1999, during Ajay Ahuja's final mission, he was part of the Indian Air Force's air operation named Operation Safed Sagar. During this mission, Flight Lieutenant K. Nachiketa's MiG-27 fighter jet was hit by enemy fire and developed a technical problem. Thus, he had to eject and land in an area controlled by Pakistani forces.
Ajay couldn't leave Nachiketa behind, and he kept flying over the area where the former landed. Then Ajay was also hit by an enemy Stinger, he had to eject, was captured, and then his body, filled with gunshot wounds was returned to India the next day.
