On July 4, 2026, Nolan Wells went to Horn Island with friends for a holiday party. Published accounts say no one saw him leave, and his friends returned to the mainland without him.
That night, a friend contacted his family, and his mother reported him missing. Search efforts began. His body was found two days later, on July 6, on the northwest beach of Horn Island. The United Cajun Navy’s president told media Wells was found face down and fully clothed.
Meanwhile, a friend of Nolan Wells, identified as Warren Hudson, has now responded to his death. While speaking to the New York Post recently, he addressed the rumours that have been emerging after Nolan’s demise, specifically the allegation that he was associated with Nolan’s death. He said:
“It’s a sick world we’re living in. It’s terrible. Nolan was my best friend. There’s no facts out, just a lot of rumours. That’s just how the internet is today. That’s really it, it’s horrible.”
The attorney for Nolan Wells’ family says an independent autopsy report on the 18-year-old will be made public on Wednesday. It will be the first outside medical assessment since the Mississippi teen was found dead near Horn Island in early July. Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump is set to release early findings at a news conference during the NAACP National Convention in Chicago, which is supposed to be attended by Nolan’s parents.
Crump has said he will run a separate investigation into Wells’ death. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped to conduct the independent autopsy. According to Crump, it will check if Wells had injuries other than those consistent with drowning.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office also performed an autopsy but has not released results yet, saying it’s waiting on toxicology tests. Crump also criticized how slowly the case is moving.
A funeral for Wells was held at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs. Family, friends, and national civil rights figures attended. His mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, spoke to those gathered and urged them to share his stories and never stop saying his name. Rev. Al Sharpton led the service and has called on local officials not to dismiss the possibility of foul play before the investigation is finished.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry paid for the funeral expenses. Various reports have also listed reward amounts between USD 100,000 and USD 125,000 for information. The offers have been linked to different combinations of Sharpton, Perry, Kaepernick, and former NFL player Terrell Owens.
