Following President, Donald Trump's analysis of the investigation method for finding Nancy Guthrie, the public is wondering if she will ever be found.
The FBI and Pima County police have spent 19 days searching for Nancy Guthrie, as of February 20, 2026, yet there is no news of her whereabouts. Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home under mysterious circumstances on the midnight of January 31, 2026 (ET). After weeks of investigation, the officials found blood trails, some ransom notes, gloves of a masked intruder outside Nancy's house and also a doorcam video of the same person. Amid that, US President, Trump weighed in on the reporting of the investigation.
In a recent press briefing aboard Air Force One, President, Donald Trump slammed the investigative tactics used in the search for Nancy Guthrie, the aged mother of Savannah Guthrie, as reported by Fox News. Trump argued that by reporting the search for the pacemaker before the process even began, investigators may have inadvertently warned the abductors. He suggested this could lead them to take drastic measures, such as harming Nancy, to prevent the device from being detected. Trump called the particular move "crazy" and was unable to fathom why the FBI or Pima County authorities would decide on such a "strategy".
The "strategy" involved local authorities publicly disclosing their use of a high-tech signal sniffer to track Nancy Guthrie's pacemaker. Trump expressed disbelief at the publicising of the investigation's technical methods. Lastly, he encouraged the press to shift their focus to other subjects, referring to the constant coverage of the kidnapping as a "very sad situation" and suggesting it was time to "see what happens." The US President's exact words were:
"Boy, it's so...so crazy, so bad. I didn't like when they were talking about going after the pacemaker, and you know, before they even started going after it, they're coming and reporting it...I can't imagine why they would have done that, just in terms of strategy, just one little piece. I don't know. But we have to start reporting on other subjects also and see what happens. It's a very sad situation."
Trump noted that the kidnapper already knew about the search tactic before it started, so they've definitely been alerted. The abductors will now be more cautious and might leave no chance for investigators to reach them, making it more difficult to find Nancy Guthrie. In the worst-case scenario, as predicted by the public, the 84-year-old might never be found.
Former FBI agents and experts have recently analysed the evidence to suggest some potential reasons why the abduction might have taken place. They suggested the motive may be linked to Nancy's daughter, Savannah Guthrie, the host of NBC's Today Show. Former FBI supervisor, James Gagliano, stated that kidnappings are typically for "profit or revenge". Another former FBI special agent, Tracy Walder, issued similar sentiments regarding the revenge motive.
Tracy predicted that the kidnapper might have an obsession with Savannah or a beef related to a story the journalist covered, and thus, from a grudge motive, might have kidnapped her mother. Agent, Brad Garrett mentioned that Nancy may have been taken to target the 54-year-old, Savannah, specifically due to her high international profile.
Besides the revenge angle, the most visible motive is profit. Several media outlets, including TMZ, received alleged ransom notes demanding millions in Bitcoin for Nancy Guthrie's safe return to her home. Former FBI agent, Lance Leising noted that it is "very odd" for ransom notes to be sent to media outlets rather than the family if the primary goal is financial gain. Another former FBI agent, Andrew McCabe, emphasised that kidnappers typically provide "proof of life" to secure payment, which has not happened in the case of Savannah Guthrie's mom.
