Heintz was an 18-year-old recent high school graduate and promising soccer player preparing to begin her freshman year at Pennsylvania Western University’s California campus. On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, she left her family’s home around 9:30 p.m. and later stopped at her boyfriend Royce Moser’s home.

According to the criminal complaint and police statements, the couple sat in Heintz’s Jeep and discussed their relationship and plans for college. The conversation reportedly became heated, after which Moser allegedly went inside the house, retrieved a large knife and returned to the vehicle. Police allege he then stabbed Heintz in the chest. Moser later reportedly told investigators that a "demon" had taken over him.

Investigators say Moser placed Heintz’s body in the rear hatch of her Jeep and drove to his mother Rachel Moser’s home. Police allege Rachel helped him clean blood from the vehicle and his clothes, provided gloves, and later placed the suspected weapon in a garbage bag. The pair then allegedly drove separately to California Borough, where the Jeep was left near the California Borough Library.

When Heintz failed to return home, her family contacted police and tracked her location. Officers found her body inside the Jeep shortly after midnight on August 20, 2026. Authorities said that Rachel and Royce Moser "tried to clean clothes, tried to clean the car up, tried to get rid of any blood stains possible, and then proceeded to take that vehicle with the mother tailing all the way down to California Borough."

According to the complaint, Rachel allegedly provided latex gloves and helped clean the vehicle and clothing in an effort to remove blood evidence. Investigators also allege that she told her son to bathe and shower and placed the knife allegedly used in the killing inside a garbage bag. The mother and son then allegedly traveled separately toward California Borough, where Heintz’s Jeep was eventually left.

PennWest California released a statement after the tragic incident, saying, "PennWest University is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Karoline Heintz, who was a first-year student at the California campus. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident, which occurred off campus, and PennWest University police are cooperating fully with the investigation."
