Besides the successful debut of Mirzapur: The Movie, Pankaj Tripathi has another reason to celebrate- his 50th birthday, which also coincides with Teacher's Day. The actor's happy phase brought the spotlight on his personal life, particularly his unique love story with his wife, Mridula Tripathi.

Pankaj Tripathi and Mridula Tripathi's unique story, from love at first sight to meeting her prospective groom

Many know Pankaj Tripathi as the scheming and ruthless 'Kaleen Bhaiya' from the Mirzapur franchise. However, beyond his on-screen persona lies a true romantic who has eyes only for his wife, Mridula Tripathi. In real life, Pankaj is a big softie with a filmy love story. Pankaj met his spouse, Mridula for the first time in 1993 at the wedding of his sister and her brother. At that time, he was studying in class eleven, and she was in ninth standard.

Pankaj recalled the meeting and, in an interview with ScoopWhoop, said it was love at first sight for him. He remembered falling for Mridula even before he knew her or interacted with her. Elaborating on the details, Pankaj said:

"It was my sister's wedding, and I saw her [Mridula] on the balcony of the terrace and thought to myself, 'This is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with.' And I did not even know who she was, or what her name was, at the time."

Both Pankaj and Mridula felt an instant connection; however, they had a complex family dynamic- as a brother and a sister from their families were already married to each other. That is why their community and families viewed a second alliance between the same households as socially unacceptable. However, the duo kept their love story going, and even maintained a long-distance relationship at one point.

Pankaj moved to New Delhi to study at the National School of Drama (NSD), while Mridula remained in Bihar. But before his shift to Delhi, something interesting happened. Mridula's parents fixed her marriage, and Pankaj accompanied her brother and sister-in-law to meet the prospective groom and have the final talks before the wedding. Upon returning, he told Mridula that he would be a perfect match for her and even joked that the guy would provide her "bhautik sukh."

Mridula didn't understand what he said and asked him to explain himself. To that, he jovially told her that he meant nothing but material happiness. She knew he was joking, and then it hit her that her joy and laughter were associated with Pankaj. She realised her love for him and shared the same with The Better India, stating:

"Pankaj accompanied my brother and sister-in-law to the prospective groom's place. He came and told me that it was a good match for me, and I would surely get much of 'bhautik sukh.' I did not know so much Hindi back then and asked what that meant, and he said 'material happiness.' That's when I felt that I was losing something very precious."

Pankaj Tripathi and Mridula's long-distance relationship and marriage

Mridula, upon realising that she couldn't be with anyone but Pankaj, broke off her betrothal. By that time, he was in Delhi, and then started their long-distance relationship. They stayed connected through handwritten letters and fixed nightly phone calls from a public booth at NSD. After Pankaj completed his studies and Mridula also landed a job, they tied the knot on January 15, 2004.

Pankaj and Mridula's 12-year courtship finally culminated in marriage. They moved to Mumbai after their marriage, and in 2006, they were blessed with a baby girl, whom they named Aashi Tripathi. The actor always credits his wife for his success, and he revealed that she had financially supported him and his dreams of becoming an actor for 10 years before he started earning enough to raise a family.
