The Despicable Me franchise has been highly successful over the years. But the debut of the ‘Minions’ in the first entry became so popular that it started a separate franchise in 2015. After two movies, the third entry, Minions & Monsters, has finally arrived at the big screen on July 1, 2026. The response to each Minions movie has been bigger and better compared to the previous one.

Minions & Monsters has already left a positive impression on critics and the audience. Featuring a completely new adventure for ‘James,’ ‘Henry,’ and ‘Ed’ this time, keep reading to know what happens in the end!

The ‘Irene’ showdown and a film-within-a-film reveal

The climax kicks off when the monster-movie shoot of the 'Minions' goes spectacularly wrong. ‘James’, ‘Henry’, and ‘Ed’ use a mythical spellbook stolen from a wicked warlock to summon real monsters for authenticity. The main threat is ‘Irene’ - a massive orange creature ‘James’ accidentally unleashes. As ‘Irene’ rampages, ‘Dort’, a cosplaying alien robot, seemingly runs away during a park date with 'Debbie.'

The ‘Minions’ are eventually forced to fight ‘Irene’ without anyone’s help. ‘Irene’ swallows ‘Henry’, and ‘James’ dives into her to rescue him while the ‘Minions’ hold off the military. They tear ‘Irene’ apart, but she reconstructs herself. Right before she consumes them, ‘Dort’ returns with other ‘Minions’ in a spacecraft and destroys ‘Irene’ for good. ‘Henry’ and ‘James’ then use the spellbook to trap ‘Goomi,’ a squid-like creature, plus ‘Phillips’ and ‘Howard,’ back inside it. The public hails the ‘Minions’ as heroes.

Because ‘Ed’ filmed the entire battle, the movie of 'James' gets a world premiere months later to a standing ovation. Then comes the meta punchline: a tour guide finishes telling the story, revealing the entire plot, including the tour, was actually a film within a film, directed by ‘James’ and ‘Henry.’

So the real chaos that everyone saw was their in-universe movie. The ‘Bright Brothers,’ studio executives, had earlier banished the ‘Minions’ from Hollywood when talkies arrived, making the DIY monster film of the 'Minions' both their comeback and their apology to the industry.

Mid-credits magic: ‘Gru,’ ‘Kyle,’ and The Spellbook’s return

Although the film does not have a post-credit scene, five mid-credits scenes expand the ending and tie it to Despicable Me. The bonus footage starts after the film-within-a-film reveal and runs before the main credits end. Scene one jumps ahead to introduce a young ‘Gru.’ The ‘Minions’ use magic from the spellbook to transform his pet dog into the fearsome ‘Kyle,’ directly linking the 1920s prequel to the original Despicable Me timeline.

Scene two shows ‘Minions’ pranking ‘Dr. Nefario’ by trapping him in an endless magical falling loop. Scene three gets wilder: ‘Kevin’ is summoned from the modern timeline and transformed into a female version of himself using the Spellbook. In scene four, ‘Bob’ and a young girl encounter a monster rabbit released from the book. Instead of running, they hug it, and the hug turns it friendly.

The final mid-credits scene has ‘Stuart’ and ‘Bob’ experimenting by turning what looks like ‘Gru’ into different animals. When the real ‘Gru’ shows up, they panic and accidentally cast a spell that leaves him without clothes. The Spellbook itself becomes the connective tissue. It was a secret weapon of 'James' for making a real monster movie, and it ends up in the hands of ‘Gru’s’ ‘Minions’ - ‘Kevin,’ ‘Stuart,’ and ‘Bob’ - who try it out.

Director, Pierre Coffin, said using the book to bring back the classic trio felt obvious for the credits. So the ending works twice: the ‘Minions’ save 1920s LA and become heroes, their movie gets made, and the mid-credits scenes seed how their chaos echoes into ‘Gru’s’ era.
