After the Spice Girls star alleged that Gilles was involved in an affair with Belafonte, the nanny recalled having a sexual relationship with Mel B for approximately seven years.

Gilles, a German national who first met Mel B and Belafonte as an 18-year-old exchange student, alleged in her filing that the former Spice Girl had portrayed her as a "homewrecker, prostitute, and extortionist" in her court documents. Gilles, in turn, claimed that her relationship with the singer began even before she became the family's nanny.
According to Gilles' 2017 lawsuit, she met Mel B and Belafonte in Los Angeles in 2009, shortly after she arrived from Germany. She alleged that the singer "seduced a naive and curious 18-year-old foreign exchange student" with "alcohol, fame, and casual sex."
Gilles claimed that she had consensual group sex with the couple shortly after meeting them. According to her court filing, she and Mel B later developed a friendship and eventually a sexual relationship that existed separately from the singer's marriage.
After returning to Germany, Gilles said she was contacted by the couple and offered a formal nanny position. She accepted the job, and her lawsuit alleged that her "sexual and employment relationship with Brown continued for approximately seven years."
The filing also alleged that Mel B would sometimes contact her to come over for drinks, sex, or childcare. Gilles alleged that most of their sexual encounters took place without Belafonte present, and that he joined only when the singer invited him.
In later court documents, the nanny described her encounters with Mel B as sporadic, sometimes occurring multiple times in a week, while stopping for months at other times.
Gilles' claims sharply contradicted the picture Mel B had presented in her own court filings. The singer had accused her then-husband, Belafonte, of having an affair with Gilles and alleged that he paid the nanny more than USD 300,000 over several years. Mel B also claimed that Gilles became pregnant by Belafonte in 2014 and had an abortion.
Gilles strongly disputed that account, saying that her pregnancy was the result of a one-night stand with a different man. The couple's former nanny alleged that Mel B was aware of the circumstances and had in fact helped her arrange the abortion and recovery.
Gilles filed her lawsuit in Los Angeles in April 2017, accusing Mel B of defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She argued that the singer's allegations had damaged her reputation by portraying her as someone who had attempted to undermine the marriage and extort the couple.
She denied using Mel B's money without her knowledge or conspiring with her husband. She also denied possessing the alleged sex tapes that Mel B claimed were connected to the dispute. Gilles said she felt "forever hurt and betrayed" by the singer and argued that the allegations had exposed deeply private details of her life.
Mel B's own allegations were serious as well. In her divorce filings, she accused Belafonte of abuse and claimed he had pressured her to participate in sexual encounters with other women. Belafonte's lawyers disputed her allegations, describing them as unfounded.
The legal battle was full of contradictory claims, and it's important to separate what each person claimed from what was legally proven. Gilles' claim of a seven-year sexual relationship with Mel B was not proven at trial, just as the competing accusations about the alleged affair were not resolved through a public jury verdict.
Mel B and Belafonte reached a private settlement in their divorce and related disputes in 2017. But Gilles' separate defamation lawsuit continued beyond the divorce proceedings.
In April 2019, Mel B and Gilles reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement, according to reporting by The Mirror. There was no public jury trial determining which account of the alleged relationships was true.
Years later, the case remains one of the more sensational chapters in Mel B's public personal life. The central allegations, however, remain disputed.
