Despite the social media star's millions of followers and the huge interest surrounding Melissa's family, she has not shared much about her husband. The only available information about Tom, as reported, is that he runs a faith-inspired art shop. Melissa Mae Carlton mentioned on Instagram that she has known Tom Carlton her whole life and that he was her "first real crush." Melissa and Tom's parents were close, and they had a tradition where every New Year's Day, his family would come over for dinner. The American influencer recalled nervously waiting and checking to see if a bright yellow camper van had pulled up into Dalaneye. Tom and his family would come in the vehicle for dinner. Melissa waited for him to come, then ignored him once he arrived at her house. She mentioned Tom would try to "start up a conversation," but she would just "keep playing it cool" even though she was dying to talk to him.
Both Melissa and Tom developed strong romantic feelings for each other in their teens, and they went on their first date when Melissa was 16, shortly before Tom departed for a Mormon mission in Scotland. Before that, Melissa moved to Canada, and Tom came out to visit a few months later, but "as friends." After Tom returned from his mission to Scotland, the couple didn't waste any time and reconnected. As they realised their mutual feelings, they decided to be each other's forever and eventually got married.
Melissa Mae Carlton and Tom Carlton's childhood friends-turned-lovers story reached a milestone when they got married. After dating for a few years, they tied the knot on November 14, 2011. The couple has been married for 14 years as of 2025. The couple's 14th wedding anniversary was not a happy one, as they had still not gotten over the loss of their daughter by then. Melissa and Tom couldn't engage in grand celebrations as they were emotionally low and missed their daughter dearly. Melissa and Tom had four children, among whom two daughters have passed away untimely, leaving the couple grief-stricken.
Lily is Melissa and Tom's eldest child. Her mother has described her as the "first joy" of her life. Abigail was the second daughter of the couple, who passed away unexpectedly in April 2024 at the age of 9. Her death was initially attributed to sepsis, though more recent medical evaluations following her sister's death suggest she may have had an underlying genetic heart condition. Sharing about the moral support the couple received after Abi's death, Melissa wrote:
"We are feeling the worst pain we have ever felt in our lives, but somehow profound peace at the same time. We feel so lifted up by our family, friends, church community and neighborhood. We are overwhelmed by all of the people who have shown up the last few days to give us hugs, sit, cry and laugh with us."
Harry is the couple's third baby and only son, who was baptised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in November 2025. Melissa expressed gratitude for "the missionaries who spent time with him, taught him, and set such a good example as he prepared for baptism." After Harry, Melissa, and Tom's youngest child, little Molly, was born. Molly passed away suddenly on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. Sharing the sad news of her demise, Molly wrote:
"We are exhausted and shaken after a day filled with trauma and heartbreak,” she wrote. “I feel numb. I cannot yet accept that this is real. I am not ready for this pain."
Melissa noted that Molly "missed her sister [Abigail] so deeply" and would frequently ask when they would be reunited. Doctors suspect a "genetic heart condition" as the cause of the death of Melissa and Tom's little angel. Following the death of Molly, her mother recounted a touching moment where Molly had told him she "wanted to be with Abi" just days before she passed. Regarding Molly's reason for demise, Melissa shared:
"The doctors believe Molly had a genetic heart condition and suspect this may have been the case with Abi as well…This type of condition, we've been told that even a minor illness could potentially trigger a sudden cardiac event."
