As per reports, Dermot passed away after a long battle with stage 4 prostate cancer. His family confirmed his death and revealed that the broadcaster was surrounded by his loved ones.
While Dermot had been a very popular face on television, do you know that he had been married to a fellow journalist named Maria Keegan for nearly four decades? Well, that's true. For those who do not know, Maria Keeghan is a popular journalist and television producer. However, Maria preferred to work behind-the-scenes, unlike her husband, who often appeared on television. It is worth noting that Maria rarely gave interviews or even appeared at public events. Decades back, in 1989, Maria and Dermot got married in an intimate ceremony held at London.
Even though there is not much information available about their first meeting or love story, Maria and Dermot's marriage lasted for 37 years until the latter's unexpected passing in 2026. Years ago, in 2010, Dermot gave a rare glimpse into his married life with Maria and shared that she used to handle all his finances. He was quoted as saying:
"Maria runs the domestic budget and looks after my office administration. We have a business account and all the money I earn goes into that then feeds into our separate personal accounts. I haven’t got a clue how the domestic bills get paid – I leave it all to Maria."
During their marriage of 37 years, Maria and Dermot were proud parents of four children- three daughters, Kitty, Molly and Alice and son, Jack. Their eldest daughter, Kitty is 33 years old. Currently, she works in the tech sector in Berlin. On the other hand, their daughter, Molly, who is 28 years old, reportedly works in the PR industry.
Their third child, Alice, 26, works as an environmentalist in Ireland. Lastly, their son, Jack is 23 years old and reportedly, he is a football coach in Spain. Despite this, their children maintain a private life. In 2010, they made a rare public appearance, during the premiere of Despicable Me. Two years later, in 2012, Dermot also appeared with Molly at the quiz show School’s Out.
British broadcaster, Dermot Murnagham, who passed away on July 11, 2026, was one of the most respected faces in British television journalism. During his career of more than four decades, he worked with major companies like Channel 4, the BBC, ITV and Sky News. He was widely-recognised for his calm reporting skills. Apart from this, he rose to fame as the host of Eggheads.
Last year, in 2025, Dermot opened up about his stage 4 prostate cancer. He revealed details about it and explained that he was responding well to the treatment. At that same time, he also spread awareness about it and encouraged men to get it tested because it turns fatal. He had shared:
"Needless to say, my message to all men over 50, in high-risk groups or displaying symptoms, is get yourself tested and campaign for routine prostate screening by the NHS."
Now that the broadcaster has died, his family is left behind heartbroken. On July 11, 2026, Dermot's family shared a statement, confirming his passing. They also thanked the doctors, who took great care of him till his last breath. Apart from them, BBC Breakfast also shared a post, which could be read as:
"Dermot Murnaghan was a legend on BBC Breakfast. The audience loved him. We loved him. It was wonderful to welcome him back to the red sofa just a few months ago. We laughed about his time on the show and we shared his crucial message on prostate cancer. Thank you Dermot for being part of our lives. We will miss you."
