He recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a rare type of blood cancer. Kelley revealed the news via an Instagram video on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. In the video, Kelley’s wife, Cassie McConnell, stayed right by the singer’s side, highlighting that she will always be there for him through thick and thin.
According to reports, Cassie McConnell used to work as a model when she was a young girl. After she landed on the covers of two major magazines, she got many more gigs within the span of two years. However, Cassie was already done with her modeling career in 1990. At the age of 6, she decided that she would rather stay in Nashville and play with her friends than go back to New York and build a career in that field.
As an adult, Cassie worked as a publicist for her now-husband, Charles Kelley's brother, Josh Kelley. This is how the couple crossed paths, and Charles instantly fell in love with her at first sight. Gushing about the time and calling Cassie the prettiest girl that has ever paid attention to him, the Lady A singer said:
“I’m not gonna say it was like a movie, but it was like a movie. We just lock eyes the whole night. We’re kind of looking at each other, and we’re like, 'Holy moly.’ She’s the prettiest girl that had ever paid me any attention. We just started talking. Every bar we went to, it was like us going into the corner talking. It was just love at first sight. And the very next day, I called her up and said, ‘Can I take you on an official date? I’d love to take you out to dinner.’”
Since then, Cassie and Kelley have never left each other's side. Many might not be aware, but it was actually Kelley’s fellow Lady A member, Hillary Scott, who was secretly trying to set him and Cassie up. Recalling the reason behind this, he admitted:
“Little did we know that Hillary Scott kind of secretly was trying to set me up with Cassie. And the reason was that our keyboard player Jonathan, who still plays with us today, was dating Cassie’s sister. So all this to say, they were getting ready, and I didn’t know this was going on.”
Despite falling in love at first sight and after dating for months, Cassie and Kelley briefly broke up back in 2008. Cassie confessed that it was actually great and worked out in their favor, as she got to date other people and realize that her heart was always with the singer. After being broken up for the entire summer of that year, once she and Kelley got back together, he wasted no time in proposing to her on the morning of Christmas 2008. In June 2009, Cassie and Kelley tied the knot in Nashville. Over the years, the couple has welcomed two children together.
Charles Kelley announced his blood cancer diagnosis in a video filmed alongside his wife, Cassie. The country singer said that he found out he had cancer when his doctor administered several different blood tests to him after he suffered from rib fractures. Kelley said that he is “hopeful” about recovering while adding:
“One of the last blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma. It’s rare. But I’m young, I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years, that even the life expectancy far exceeds what it used to be.”
