The news made headlines on May 27, 2026, after a Singapore court sentenced him to six months in jail for contempt of court, according to Bloomberg. The dramatic fall of one of India's biggest startup success stories took another sharp turn.
According to reports, the edtech founder has been ordered to pay a massive fine along with a jail sentence. However, amid that, the limelight has also shifted onto his wife and personal life. Byju Raveendran has been found in contempt of the court in Singapore and has been given a stern punishment. The court reportedly found that Byju Raveendran had repeatedly violated several court orders linked to his assets dating back to April 2024. According to reports, the Singapore court has now ordered him to surrender himself to authorities and serve his sentence.
However, that is not all. Byju Raveendran has also been asked to pay costs of around USD 70,500 and submit documents proving his legal ownership of Beeaar Investco Pte, a company that held shares in a related entity, Bloomberg reported. Amid the ongoing buzz, it has not yet been confirmed whether the edtech founder is in Singapore or elsewhere.
Divya Gokulnath is a well-known teacher who later transcended into the entrepreneurial world. She is currently the co-founder and director of Byju's, along with her husband, Byju Raveendran. For the uninitiated, Byju's is a company that offers online learning. According to reports, Divya was born on April 28, 1987, in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Her father is a former nephrologist who worked at Apollo Hospitals. Meanwhile, her mother previously worked as a programming executive at Doordarshan TV.
Divya is her parents' only child and was very close to her father growing up. Divya Gokulnath began her educational journey at Frank Anthony Public School. She later found her passion for science and got her Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology from RV College of Engineering.
After completeing her Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology from RV College of Engineering, Divya Gokulnath met Byju Raveendran in 2007. He became her instructor for GRE preparations and even encouraged her to become a teacher due to her questions during breaks between classes. Despite their seven-year age gap, Byju Raveendran and Divya fell for each other, and after dating for a while, they tied the knot in 2009. The couple soon welcomed their two children. However, not much is known about them.
Divya Gokulnath's career began as a teacher in 2008 at the age of 21, after Byju Raveendran encouraged her that she was a natural. Almost three years later, in 2011, Divya and her husband, Byju Raveendran, co-founded the online education platform Byju's. The platform began with Divya, who appeared in videos as a teacher. Divya was in charge of user experience, content, and brand marketing during the COVID-19 lockdown in India. According to The Indian Express, for her, the idea came up during lockdown, when she began working from home. She shared what a typical day in her life looked like and said:
"Juggling son's online classes, meetings, recording video lessons and spending time with a newborn."
To allow students to continue their studies at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, she monitored access to BYJU's free educational content. She is currently the edtech company's director. However, that is not all. Divya Gokulnath was selected in March 2022 to serve as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry's EdTech Taskforce leader.
