Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd welcomed their first daughter, Diane Elizabeth, on November 27, 1960. However, in an unfortunate incident, almost 2 years after her birth, their little angel passed away. Diane was pregnant with their first child when the couple tied the knot, believing it was the beginning of their happily-ever-after. Nonetheless, what happened on May 18, 1962, left their relationship in shambles. Recalling the same, Bruce said in the documentary:

"My wife was at a Dodgers game; I was at a track meet at the Coliseum. I was told over the loudspeaker to go to the desk, and some plainclothes cop said to me, 'Are you Bruce Dern?' And I said 'Yes,' and he said, 'You should go home right now, because your child just drowned in a swimming pool.'"

Bruce Dern recalled that Diane Elizabeth was spending time with their family's maid at their Los Angeles house while he and Diane Ladd were both out for work. However, when the maid got up to answer a call, Diane Elizabeth used a spoon to unlock the gate leading to the family's pool area. The maid didn't realise that the toddler was in the pool when she began looking for Diane Elizabeth "because the gate had swung shut," Bruce recalled in the documentary. He further added:

"So I go home. I went into the bedroom, and I looked at the little girl on the bed, and it's the only time in my life, I think, that it broke my heart. I felt ashamed that it was on my watch. I never got over it. You never get over it."
