Director Anik Dutta’s recent demise on May 27, 2026, is being considered a big loss for the Bengali film industry. Anik was hospitalised after he allegedly fell from the roof of his house. However, he lost his life to his injuries. Dutta was also battling some respiratory issues for a long time. It remains unknown if those health problems had anything to do with his death.

For the unversed, Anik Dutta was reportedly 66 years old at the time of his death. Although Anik was known for covering various themes in his movies throughout his career, he also had a family outside the entertainment industry. He was married to Sandhi Dutta, and they had a daughter named Oishee.
Notably, Sandhi’s current profession remains a mystery for now. On the other hand, Oishi is reportedly staying abroad. While their relationship was out of the spotlight for all this time, Sandhi and Anik exchanged vows in 1997. 25 years later, the duo was requested by their friends to renew their vows, and it happened in 2022. Anik even shared a photo through his Facebook page at that time, and the caption reads:
“On our 25th, friends made me go through what I refused to do on our wedding day. Put on this hideous dunce cap and apply vermillion (residual signs of violent male domination) on Tutuk’s head. Indrani Mukherjee sent these photos along with her wish. Religious symbols were not so contentious those days.”
However, reports of Anik and Sandhi’s split emerged in 2025. The rumours stated that the couple was supposed to get divorced, with insiders claiming that Anik was staying alone at his residence in South Kolkata. Born in Calcutta, West Bengal, Anik Dutta won multiple accolades at the Anandalok Awards, Filmfare Awards, and more. Late author and director, Satyajit Ray, was a big inspiration for Anik, who always paid tribute to him through his movies.
Although Jadubabur Natni marked his debut as a director in 2009, the film has remained unreleased until today. The movie’s release was cancelled after some political controversies emerged in West Bengal. Anik eventually gained recognition for the fantasy horror comedy, Bhooter Bhabishyat, released in 2012. He even wrote the Hindi remake of the film, Gang of Ghosts.
Anik later became a popular face with other movies like Aschorjo Prodip, Megnad Badh Rahasya, Bhobishyoter Bhoot, and more. His last film was Joto Kando Kolkatatei, a detective mystery thriller. It featured Abir Chatterjee and Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed in the lead roles, and was released in 2025. The film was commercially successful and left a positive impression on critics at the same time.
