Jason and Melanie had met several times through their mutual friends, but he reportedly didn't pay much attention to her and didn't remember her in subsequent meetings. Jason thought they first met on the set of the dramedy, The Big Ask in 2013. Melanie recalled him being two hours late for the table read of the show and reintroducing himself to her, even though they had co-hosted an actors' brunch together just six weeks before. In The Big Ask, the duo did not play a couple; however, their on-screen chemistry sparked dating rumours.

The couple then developed an off-screen connection during a period which they both described as difficult times in their lives. Jason and Melanie were going through breakups when they found solace in each other. While they didn't start dating during the filming of The Big Ask, they did so shortly after the movie's release. As fans loved their chemistry, in the next year, in 2014, Jason and Melanie were cast together again for We'll Never Have Paris. The casting was hilarious as he had to play her brother in the film. Then in 2016, Melanie and Jason Ritter worked together again in The Intervention (2016), where they were paired up as a couple. Talking to ScreenCrush about how comfortable they are in acting together, she said:

"Well, it [filming together] was really fun. We had done it before, that was the movie we had met each other on. It was fun, it was just easy. We get along really well. He is just such a sweet, easygoing person. It was nice, he is very easy to be around. He is such a good actor."

Jason and Melanie announced their engagement in February 2017, though the proposal was so "confusing" to her that she realised that they were engaged after three days. Melanie shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that they once looked at rings together in a shop, and she told him they looked like an engagement ring. The next day, he presented her with a ring and gave a "strange speech", as per her. She was so unsure of what was happening that she actually asked him if they were breaking up. When he assured her that they weren't, she replied, "Well, thank you, lovely, good chat."

It wasn't until three days later, when Jason and Melanie went to meet his family for Christmas and he announced that they were engage. She finally realised he had proposed. Because the first proposal attempt didn't go as planned, he made it a sweet tradition to re-propose to her over and over to make up for it. One of the re-proposals took place on her birthday while she was filming The Tattooist of Auschwitz in Slovakia.

Jason and Melanie walked down the aisle in May 2022 after about five years of togetherness. They wed a private ceremony on the front porch of their rental home in Atlanta. Notably, Jason delayed the wedding as he initially didn't consider himself worthy as a partner due to his alcoholism. Opening up about parenthood, Jason told PEOPLE Now:
