Netflix's The Crash brought the highly publicised Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21) back to the discussions. She was convicted of dual murder after intentionally slamming her car into a brick building at 100 mph, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend, Davion Flanagan. Notably, she maintained that the crash was just an accident; however, she was convicted of the crime and might even face a lifetime imprisonment. Recently, one of her jail inmates, claiming to be her ex, made some explosive allegations against her.

Shortly after, Mackenzie and Shyann allegedly started dating, and the latter got used to having the former around, as according to her, "two weeks in prison feels like two months." She added, "All you're doing is seeing the same people every single day, 24 hours a day." Mackenzie and Shyann bonded quickly and The Crash's subject wanted to get intimate with her by the second or third day of their relationship. Shyann recalled Mackenzie taking her by surprise as she asked her:

"Why aren't you touching me? I want you to be all over me. I want you to be out here for everyone in the yard to see me."

The texts were allegedly so aggressive that she feared for her safety and completely stopped posting on social media for months. She told PEOPLE that she strongly suspects the texts were from inmates who were locked up in prison alongside Mackenzie at that time. Shyann remained silent until May 2026, when she began posting updates again following the release of The Crash. Recalling the scary experience, Shyann said:
