While he was on stage, Lionel requested a chair from his team. A video from the event also went viral in which he was spotted performing after sitting down. Further updates on his condition are currently awaited.
The 77-year-old is well-known for his association with the funk and soul group, Commodores. Lionel has also released multiple solo albums over the years, including Louder Than Words, Renaissance, Just for You, and more. Amid the recent health update, Lionel’s personal life has grabbed attention. For the unversed, he is a father of three children.
Lionel Richie’s eldest child, Nicole Richie, was born on September 21, 1981. Her biological parents were Peter Michael Escovedo and Karen Moss. Escovedo is a musician and the brother of drummer Sheila E., who was in Lionel's band. Because her biological parents were facing financial difficulties, Nicole began living with Lionel Richie and his first wife, Brenda Harvey, when she was two years old, and they legally adopted her in 1983 when she was nine.
Nicole made a career in television and fashion. She first became widely known on the Fox reality series The Simple Life, which aired from 2003 to 2007 with Paris Hilton. After that, she worked as an author, releasing the novels The Truth About Diamonds in 2005 and Priceless in 2010.
Her main career since then has been as a fashion designer and entrepreneur. She is the founder and creative director of House of Harlow 1960, a jewelry and ready-to-wear line, and also launched the line Winter Kate.
Lionel Richie’s second child, Miles Brockman Richie, was born on May 27, 1994, in Los Angeles, California. He is the first biological son of Lionel Richie and his second wife, Diane Alexander. Lionel and Diane married on December 21, 1995, and divorced in 2004.
Miles was nine at the time of the divorce and was primarily raised by his mother in Los Angeles. He initially enrolled at the UCLA to study accounting but left to pursue a creative career in fashion modeling. He signed with Wilhelmina Models in 2018 and made his runway debut that same year for Philipp Plein at New York Fashion Week. He has since modeled for editorial and commercial campaigns.
Lionel Richie’s youngest child, Sofia Richie Grainge, was born on August 24, 1998, in Los Angeles. She is the biological daughter of Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander, and is the youngest of the three. Her godfather was Michael Jackson. Her career started early in modeling, with features in Teen Vogue, Nylon, and Who What Wear at the age of 14.
Sofia made her official runway debut in 2016 and has walked for Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jeremy Scott, Yeezy, and Tommy Hilfiger. She has worked in campaigns for Michael Kors, Adidas, and Chanel beauty. In addition to modeling, she has worked as a fashion designer, collaborating on a capsule collection for House of Harlow 1960 and releasing collections with PrettyLittleThing and other brands.
Back in June 2026, at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, Lionel Richie cut the show short just over halfway through his set. While performing Dancing on the Ceiling, he sat on a stage step, which he said he had never done before. Notably, he was heard telling the crowd:
“When you're feeling dizzy, sit your ass down.”
Lionel then moved to the piano to perform Three Times a Lady and then announced an intermission. However, he did not return. Saxophonist Dino Soldo later told the audience Lionel was not feeling well and could not continue.
The next day, Live Nation Chicago announced that, under doctors' advisement to rest, he would postpone two shows scheduled in Chicago and Columbus. Drummer John Paris said he was a little dehydrated. Richie returned to the stage on June 30, 2026, in Pittsburgh.
