After a couple of years of dating, they went on to marry on February 24, 1992. Kurt kept expressing his love for his wife as he thought that they were totally compatible.
The same year, they welcomed their first child, a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, on August 18, 1992. However, in 1994, Kurt took the heartwrenching decision to end his life, which left many in shock, especially their huge fan following. Now, a new document revealed that Kurt's widow, Courtney, demanded the entire police file be handed to her, including copies.
As per a report by the New York Post, Courtney wanted the entire police file to be handed to her, including the copies left at the Seattle Police Department. She made the request a year after Kurt's death on October 20, 1995. Talking about Kurt's passing, he was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his Seattle mansion.
Soon, investigators declared that Kurt took his own life, and his wife agreed, but a group of people believed that it was a homicide. Now, new details regarding the case have surfaced, and it claims that a lawyer wrote a letter to then-Seattle Chief of Police Norm Stamper in 1995 to hand over all the investigation files regarding Love's husband's passing. The lawyer wrote:
"This letter is to request that the complete investigation file of the Seattle Police Department pertaining to Mr. Cobain’s death be delivered to me, with no further records or copies to remain with the Department. I confirm on behalf of Mr Cobain’s estate and Ms Love-Cobain that they are satisfied that the Seattle Police Department performed a complete and thorough investigation into Mr Cobain’s death. Our clients agree with and accept, without any reservation, the Department’s final determination that Mr Cobain’s death was a suicide. The matter can be closed."
The case file had undeveloped rolls of 35mm still film and Polaroid photos which were taken for investigation and copies of personal letters written by Kurt Cobain. And some more personal and private information. While many might think that there was a hidden motive behind Courtney's demand, her lawyer explained that it was due to many people who had tried to make money from the sale and distribution of material pertaining to Kurt's death.
However, the Seattle Police Department did not agree with the demand and chose not to hand over the file to Kurt's widow. Retired Seattle police Captain Neil Low, who earlier backed the suicide verdict, called it the right decision. After 2005's audit, his thoughts regarding the suicide angle shifted, and he was convinced it was a homicide. He was quoted as saying:
"Attorney Bryan Collucio’s request that the SPD give his client all of the police records related to the Cobain investigation is totally absurd. As an ‘officer of the court,’ you would expect Mr Collucio to know that police agencies are required to document all of their official business and correspondence as a matter of public record. How could there be public record compliance if the police gave everything to this attorney and his law firm? Where would the accountability be?"
Not only this, but Courtney also demanded that police should destroy the crime scene photos of her husband's death. She feared that it would be released online, but the department denied all such requests. However, in 2014, they released some of the photos, which showed the outside of Kurt's home and greenhouse where his body was found.
