Did you know Kurt Cobain went into a temporary coma before his death? As questions have been raised about the Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain's death, let's look back at his last days.
Kurt Cobain, one of the most beloved American musicians, is in the news 30 years after his death. The lead member of the band, Nirvana, Cobain’s untimely death at the age of 27 in 1994, shocked his huge fanbase. During that time, the case was closed as a suicide after an initial investigation. However, after more than 30 years, investigations claimed that the singer was indeed murdered. Let us take a look at his final days.
Kurt Cobain reportedly died on April 5, 1994, however his body wasn’t found until three days. It was later recovered by an electrician on April 8, 1994, when he arrived at the property to install a security system that Cobain had requested earlier. As per reports, Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the head by a 20-gauge shotgun. The autopsy also stated that Cobain had a fatal amount of heroin in his body when he died.
A month before his death, Cobain had dealt with serious health issues. After Nirvana’s tour stopped in 1994, Kurt was diagnosed with bronchitis and severe laryngitis, for which he was sent to Rome for treatment. The next morning, Kurt Cobain was rushed to the hospital after he ingested roughly 50 Rohypnol pills and fell into a temporary coma on March 4, 1994.
Cobain was unconscious for 20 hours after he slipped into a coma. After he was hospitalised post-consuming Rohypnol pills, his wife, Courtney Love, revealed that it was Kurt’s first suicide attempt. Talking about the same to Rolling Stone, she said:
“There was a definite suicidal urge, to be gobbling and gobbling and gobbling.”
Cobain had struggled with addiction, and depression only added to his misery. Courtney convinced Cobain to seek help, and he went to a rehab in LA, but left the facility within 36 hours. After leaving the place, he went to a country house he and Courtney purchased in Seattle three months before his death. His friends and family members were unaware of his whereabouts.
On April 1, 1994, Cobain called Courtney, which was supposedly his last call to her. She later shared details of her last conversation with her husband with a Seattle newspaper. She also revealed that his last words stayed with her as he told her, ‘Just remember, no matter what, I love you.’
In November 2025, a team of international forensic experts led by investigator Michelle Wilkins published a peer-reviewed paper. The paper presented ten major pieces of evidence suggesting that Cobain’s death was a ‘murder’ and not a ‘suicide’. The experts stated that the lethal heroin levels in Cobain’s blood would have rendered him unconscious, and an unconscious person couldn’t have shot himself.
Soon, a Utah investigator, Jason Jensen, also raised suspicion about Cobain’s death and presented the evidence to prove it was a murder. Jensen, who spent two years researching Cobain’s case, stated that he found nine people who claimed to have seen Cobain being assaulted on the night he died. Jensen also hired two handwriting experts to check on Cobain’s suicide note. The experts determined parts of Cobain’s suicide note were forged.
