Filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap, who is known for engaging and interesting movies like Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur and more, is all set for the premiere of the much talked-about thriller film, Kennedy. The thriller stars Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone. After premiering at international film festivals, the movie is all set to release in India, but with a twist. Is Kennedy skipping theatrical release in India?

A recent report by the Times Of India claimed that Anurag Kashyap's film, Kennedy, is all set to premiere on the OTT platform, Zee5. For those who do not know, the thriller first grabbed attention in 2023, when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, under the Midnight Screenings category. According to the same report by the Times Of India, Kennedy will hit Zee5 on February 20, 2026. Reportedly, it will be skipping a theatrical release in India. It is worth mentioning that the reason behind skipping theatrical release hasn't been revealed.

What to expect from Sunny Leone’s Kennedy?

If reports are to be believed, Kennedy is a neo-noir crime thriller, directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film follows 'Uday Shetty' (played by Rahul Bhat), a police officer, who suffers from chronic insomnia. He is pre-assumed to be dead; however, he continues to live a darker life under the name, 'Kennedy'. He serves as a contract killer within a corrupt system.

Soon, his life takes a complete turn when he meets a mysterious woman, 'Charlie' (played by Sunny Leone). This meeting forces 'Kennedy' to think about his moral conflicts, inner dark side and the consequences of his actions. Viewers can expect a movie that blends crime and psychological drama with a hint of emotions.

When Sunny Leone opened up about her complex character in Kennedy

During a 2023 interview with Variety, Sunny Leone had opened up about her complex role in the thriller, Kennedy. She had shared that her character, ‘Charlie’ hides a lot inside her. Sunny further mentioned that her character most likely lives in two worlds- one is where she wants to live and the other one is where she has been deliberately caught up in. Sunny Leone was quoted as saying:

"She’s a little bit of a complex character and she hides behind some of her motions. And one of the things she hides behind the most is this laugh. And I believe she’s a woman who’s caught in two different worlds – one is the one that she wants to live in and one is the one she has been deliberately caught up in. I really enjoyed playing this character. And I think she is someone who’s trying her very best to be as strong as possible at every moment of the day."

Kennedy has been premiered at multiple film festivals

For those who do not know, Kennedy has premiered at several film festivals, where it was appreciated for its engaging narrative. The film's first screening happened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. It was selected for the Midnight Screenings section. Later, it premiered at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and more. Reportedly, in 2025, it made history by being the only Indian film selected for the launch lineup of Letterboxd’s Video Store. The film also received a long standing ovation at MAMI, which left Rahul and Sunny emotional and overwhelmed.
