Apart from her professional life, Kamya has often grabbed significant attention for her tumultuous personal life. Kamya has married twice. She was first married to businessman Bunty Negi, with whom she has a daughter, Aara. In a recent interview, Kamya opened up about her toxic first marriage to Bunty.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Kamya Punjabi got candid about her first marriage to Bunty Negi. Kamya shared that she married her first husband, Bunty, at the age of 25 after dating him for three years. She admitted that there were signs even before her marriage that the relationship would not work out, and her parents had also advised her against it.
Kamya added that she kept trying to make the marriage work because she did not want to look back with the regret that she had not done enough. She went on to reveal that in her first marriage to Bunty, she faced domestic violence. In fact, there were times when she used to hide the wounds with makeup. Kamya revealed:
"We were already not getting along. We used to fight even before we got married, and things had reached a point where we should have decided not to go ahead with it, that he was not the one for me, or I was not the one for him. But you know how first love is. You feel, ‘This is it. This is the person.’ I have been through domestic violence. There was a time when I would put makeup on my face before going out so that the marks wouldn’t show."
Kamya opened up about her emotional turmoil at that time. She revealed that she used to cry all night, keeping herself locked in the bathroom. She also recalled going to rehearsals for a comedy show wearing heavy makeup to hide the marks on her face. In fact, people around her judged her for this as well, but none knew what she went through.
The TV actress shared that her first husband, Bunty, wanted her to quit acting. However, she refused to do so because she had to support her parents and family. Kamya stated that she was repeatedly questioned about her work, clothes and the people she was with. Kamya added that Bunty was suspicious of everything. In her words:
"He wanted me to stop working, but I said, ‘I will not leave my work. Why should I?’ I had to support my parents and my family. I don’t know what his thought process was, but he was suspicious about everything. If he called every 10 minutes and I didn’t answer the phone, there would be questions about why I hadn’t picked up. ‘What is this scene? Who are you with?’ Even questions about what I was wearing."
Further, in the interview, Kamya said that one day her daughter witnessed a fight between her parents and began crying. That’s when she decided to call it quits with Bunty. She confessed to not seeking alimony and shared that she was prepared to raise her daughter and bear all her expenses herself. The ex-pair got married in 2003 and finalised their divorce in 2013.
