John Legend is back as a coach on 'The Voice' Season 29. With the spotlight on him, let's take a look at his decades-long relationship with his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
John Legend is one of the most beloved and well-known American singers, songwriters, pianists and record producers. Many might not be aware, but at the beginning of his musical career, he often worked behind the scenes for other artists like Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill. Later, John signed with Kanye West's GOOD Music record label and released his debut album, Get Lifted, in 2004. Owing to his growing popularity in the industry at the time, John Legend has been featured on several records since.
Looking at his own discography, John has released 10 albums to date. To mention, in addition to releasing music, John also frequently appears on TV shows, most notably, The Voice. At present, John Legend is a coach and judge on The Voice Season 29, which premiered just a few days ago, with its second episode airing on March 2, 2026. As fans look forward to seeing more of their favourite singer on the show, let's take a look at John Legend's personal life, especially his relationship with his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen crossed paths with each other for the first time on the set of the singer's music video, Stereo in September 2006. During a 2018 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Chrissy got candid about how she and John got intimate during the same evening of their first encounter. Following this, however, the pair apparently took things slow, especially with Chrissy leaving John “by himself for a while.” The model explained the reason behind this when speaking with Cosmopolitan in 2014. According to her, the way she and John started wasn't the best way to lock someone down early on.
Chrissy also revealed that marriage was never the end goal for her and that she was just happy to be with him without complicating things by asking questions like, “What are we?” John Legend mirrored Chrissy's sentiments during a conversation with the Los Angeles Confidential in 2015. He confessed that he never thought Chrissy would be the woman he would marry from day one. Apparently, he is the type of person, “who needs to grow into that feeling.”
While they are both celebrities, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are no different from regular couples. While one might think that the couple have the most perfect relationship from the outside, John surprised everyone when he revealed that he had tried to break up with Chrissy during a 2017 interview with The Guardian. But thankfully, at the time, Chrisy refused to break up with him by simply saying, “No.” In later years, Chrissy recounted the incident and wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"It wasn't a typical breakup. He was on tour, and his voice hurt, and he was being a whiny face about everything, and so yeah, I was like 'no.'"
After years of dating, John Legend finally got down on one knee and proposed to Chrissy Teigen while they were vacationing in the Maldives. A representative for John confirmed the happy news to People on December 27, 2011. This made Chrissy Teigen a step closer to fulfilling her wish, which she made in Lake Como, Italy. For those unaware, in a 2016 Instagram post, Chrissy revealed that she asked to marry and have children with John, the love of her life.
On September 10, 2013, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend were legally married at a courthouse in New York City. Interestingly, this was just before they had their real wedding, with renowned model, Irina Shayk serving as their witness. Chrissy Teigen gave insights into their courthouse wedding during an October 2012 interview with E! News. She said:
"We actually got married after going to a couple of Fashion Week shows at Vera Wang, ironically, who actually did my dress, but we got married at the courthouse right after. We are dumb and didn't realise that our Italian wedding would not be recognised unless we had a real ceremony in New York City."
A few days after John Legend and Chrissy Teigen had their courthouse wedding in NYC, they went on to have a real and grander wedding in Lake Como, Italy. For her big day, Chrissy chose to wear a Vera Wang gown featuring an open back and a lifted tulle skirt adorned with hand-cut petal embroidery details.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen's first child was born to them on April 14, 2016. They lovingly named their daughter, Luna Simone. Announcing her birth, Chrissy wrote on Instagram, “She's here! Luna Simone Stephens, we are so in love with you! And sleepy. Very sleepy.”
A year later, on November 17, 2017, Chrissy revealed that she is pregnant with her and John's second child. The couple welcomed their son, Miles Theodore Stephens, on May 16, 2018. Well, after Chrissy became pregnant for the third time, she sadly lost their baby, whom they had named Jack.
After overcoming such a loss and undergoing IVF treatment, in August 2022, the couple announced that they were expecting another baby, and Chrissy gave birth in January 2023. In the same year, on June 19, 2023, Chrissy and John welcomed their fourth child, son, Wren Alexander Stephens, via surrogate.
Even in 2026, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's relationship seems to be going as strong as ever.
