Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleJohn Goodman has been hogging the limelight, looking unrecognizable after losing 200 pounds. The Roseanne star's latest transformation left many in shock. However, he has been claiming that he lost weight after being sick and tired of his illness. The actor revealed that he was eating a lot and even had to seek medical help to improve his health.
John Goodman looks significantly different after he lost approximately 198 lbs. However, did you know that his transformation came following a terrifying realization? In a recent conversation with The New Yorker, the 74-year-old actor reflected on his struggle with weight and alcoholism, saying he got sober in his 50s, but it took him years to manage his relationship with food.
In a candid chat, John Goodman revealed that he would lose weight, only to gain it back almost as quickly. He reflected on feeling tired of the back and forth and deciding that he would do something about it. He shared that to improve his health, he "had an operation on my stomach." However, he became anemic and lost a layer of fat. He was quoted as saying:
"I'd lose sixty pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, eighty pounds. And that got tiring. I took steps so I wouldn't have to do that anymore. I was almost four hundred pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking."
In the same conversation, John Goodman reflected on his experience with alcoholism and revealed that his struggle with booze began in 1978 when his then-girlfriend had put him on waivers. John recalled that because of her, his nights were free for the first time in five years. He recalled going out to multiple bars and drinking till it became a "habit".
John Goodman recalled there was a place named Café Central that became his home, as he used to get extremely drunk there in his pursuit to find "friends" and "people to hang around and laugh with." He even talked about his attempt to get sober and revealed it came after he got sick of being sick and tired all the time. Calling his drinking a vicious cycle, he said:
"I started gaining weight at an alarming rate. There's a saying in the rooms: I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. The thing about instant gratification is you don't really care what's going to happen right after it—which always led to bigger hangovers or me getting the shakes, and having to drink to get rid of the shakes, and that vicious cycle. I was in a position, when I quit, where I had to be hospitalized one way or the other."
John Goodman revealed that he soon realized how selfish his drinking had made him and admitted that he "had a lot of catching up to do" in terms of maturity, as he "was delaying maturation by drinking." He was quoted as saying:
"I was overlooking real life. And it was great to see there was a life where I didn't have to use anything to enjoy it."
John Goodman previously talked about his weight loss journey with The Rolling Stone in 2023. He revealed that he began incorporating boxing and daily walks into his routine. He further shared that his routine would include "just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork." John admitted that he never got "good enough" to trust himself to spar because once he got whacked in the face, he didn't know that he wouldn't "lose it."
