Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines met in 2001 in Waco, Texas. Joanna was working at her father’s tire shop, and Chip came in for a brake repair. He noticed Joanna’s photo on the wall, asked about her, and later called to get her number. They went on their first date soon after and began dating in 2002. At the time, Chip was running a small business flipping and renting houses, while Joanna was working in marketing and also developing an interest in design.
The couple married on May 31, 2003, in Waco. They had an age gap of three years. In the early years of marriage, they bought, renovated, and sold homes together, and also managed rental properties to build income. During this period, they launched Magnolia Homes and continued taking on renovation projects around Waco.
As they built their business, their family started expanding slowly. Their first child, Drake, was born in 2005. This was followed by a daughter named Ella in 2006. They had a son named Duke in 2008, and a daughter named Emmie in 2010. The couple kept working on home renovations and developed a reputation locally for their design and construction work.
Joanna and Chip later appeared together in the HGTV series, Fixer Upper, in 2013. The show featured the couple purchasing distressed homes, renovating them, and helping clients with interior design. It ran for five seasons and concluded in 2018. While filming the series, the couple had their fifth child, Crew, who was born in 2018.
After Fixer Upper ended in 2018, Joanna and Chip focused on expanding Magnolia. They opened Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, along with restaurants and retail stores. In 2021, they launched Magnolia Network, a cable channel and streaming platform featuring home, food, and lifestyle programming. They also returned to television with Fixer Upper: Welcome Home.
Chip Gaines was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and grew up in Texas. After studying business at Baylor University, he started working in real estate early. In the early 2000s, he began buying, renovating, and renting houses in Waco, Texas, and ran a small construction and property business.
In 2003, the same year he married Joanna, the couple combined their skills and launched Magnolia Homes. Chip took the lead on construction, demolition, and project management. He was responsible for sourcing properties, overseeing crews, and handling the physical work on each renovation.
Before television, Chip built a local reputation in Waco for flipping homes and managing rentals. His hands-on style and focus on job sites became a core part of the Magnolia brand as the business grew beyond individual projects.
In the years after the HGTV series featuring Joanna and Chip concluded, the latter shifted more time to growing Magnolia’s operations. He played a key role in developing Magnolia’s construction teams, retail ventures, and hospitality projects in Waco. He also became a central on-air presence for Magnolia Network after its 2021 launch, appearing in shows focused on building, remodeling, and business.
