The couple, who got married in 2014, are parents to three kids; their eldest son, Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. And on July 19, 2026, the duo welcomed their fourth baby, another boy, whom they named Alec Neel Vance. JD Vance and Usha Vance first crossed paths at Yale Law School and became friends. The duo connected through a class writing assignment in which they were paired as partners. In his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, Vance recalled being overwhelmed by his feelings for Usha and how friends noticed his lovesickness. When he got to know about Usha’s single status, Vance revealed his feeling to her and the duo began dating.
Usha and Vance came from different cultures and had different religious beliefs. Usha Bala Chilukuri was born in the suburb of California to Telugu Indian immigrants and her parents were Telugu brahmins. Vance, on the other hand was a born Christian. However, despite their differing backgrounds, the couple navigated cultural and personal challenges together and got married in 2014.
The couple adapted each other’s culture because of the mutual love and respect they have for each other. She once revealed how he adapted to her vegetarian diet and even learned to cook food for her mother. Speaking about the same, Usha said:
“He wanted to know everything about me, where I came from, what my life had been like. Although he’s a meat and potatoes kind of guy, he adapted to my vegetarian diet and learned to cook food for my mother—Indian food. Before I knew it, he’d become an integral part of my family.”
During their dating phase in college, Vance was moving away from Christianity and it was during this time that his wife, Usha, played a major role in his spiritual journey. Usha, who believed in spirituality, helped Vance find his lost connection with the almighty. He rediscovered his spiritual connection, and it helped him tremendously in his career and life.
While JD Vance is a renowned politician, Usha Chilukari is a famous American lawyer. From serving as a law clerk for Amul Thapar to working for Munger Tolles and Olson LLP to serving on the Gates Cambridge Alumni Association board, she is a renowned figure in the American law industry. She also worked for the law firm, Munger, Tolls and Olson for six years. She had worked with high-profile clients like Paramount Pictures, The Walt Disney Company, and a few others.
Usha always had a calming impact on JD Vance and he has often praised his wife in interviews, describing her as a “powerful female voice”. In an interview with Megyn Kelly Show podcast, Vance spoke about Usha’s influence over his career and said:
“Usha definitely brings me back to Earth a little bit, and if I maybe get a little bit too cocky or a little too proud, I just remind myself that she is way more accomplished than I am. I’m one of those guys who really benefits from having, like, a sort of powerful female voice on his left shoulder saying, ‘Don’t do that, do do that’—it just is important.”
