Born in Jalandhar, Jasmine’s family moved to California when she was in the 8th or 9th standard. Life completely took a U-turn for Jasmine, who didn’t even know how to speak English. On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, the Jaiye Sajna singer said her life changed drastically after her family moved to the US. Her father, who enjoyed a respected legal career in Punjab, had to work at a gas station in America.

On the other hand, Jasmine’s mother, a former teacher in India, took a job at a factory and even picked cherries to support the family. They lived in a low-income one-bedroom apartment and relied on ‘food stamps’ to survive. In the podcast, Jasmine recalled asking her father why he had no shoes on as they sat in the snow, to which he replied that snowshoes were very expensive. Jasmine revealed that her father left his high-paying job in India to give a better life to her and her siblings.

Her drinking bouts began after she lost her father, and alcohol was a mode to cope with the sudden loss. She struggled with alcohol addiction for two to three years. Though she admitted regret because of the choices she made, it became important for her to come out of the dark period. Describing how her father’s death made her miserable, Jamine stated:

“My father was a silent type, a good, righteous man. He was the anchor. When he left, hum sab bikhar gaye. We are still trying to gather the pieces. It’s been more than ten years. I miss him. I want to celebrate success with him. My family broke apart; my father was no more. I drank more than I should have, and I regret it, but it was important for me at that time.”
