After the New York Knicks' championship win at the NBA Finals Game 5, Jalen Brunson defended sports analyst, Monica McNutt, after she received backlash from Swifties for her comments on Taylor Swift.
Knicks analyst, Monica McNutt has found herself in a rather uncomfortable position. For those unaware, Monica has been facing tremendous backlash from Swifties after she questioned Taylor Swift's loyalty to the New York Knicks while the Love Story singer sat courtside at Madison Square Garden. Amid the ongoing controversy, Knicks star, Jalen Brunson has now come to Monica's defence.
Jalen Brunson is having the best time of his life after the New York Knicks clinched the NBA championship during Game 5. After his win, Jalen was seen celebrating with sports analyst, Monica McNutt courtside. Amid his postgame excitement, he soon turned his attention to the fact that Monica has been facing a lot of heat online. Speaking directly to the Swifties fanbase, Jalen said:
“I just wanna say something to the Swifties. She's a really good one. Cut her some slack. It's all good, I promise.”
The 2026 NBA finals, especially Game 4 between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, saw a host of celebrities in attendance. Among them, the one who caught the attention was none other than the 14-time Grammy winner, Taylor Swift. The singer was joined by her close friends, Este and Alana Haim. Together, the trio watched the incredible comeback that New York pulled off and celebrated their victory. However, in a moment when Taylor Swift appeared on the arena's big screen, Monica McNutt seemed less than impressed. At the time, she was heard saying live on broadcast:
“Is that Taylor Swift down there? She's not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl.”
It is worth noting that when Monica questioned if it was indeed Taylor, her fellow announcer, Tyler Murray, replied that it was indeed the pop star by pointing out her “long ponytail” and “blue” outfit. Well, ever since her comment, Monica has been facing backlash from Taylor Swift fans, who took it as an off-the-cuff remark.
After Monica McNutt's comment on Taylor Swift went viral, many fans rushed to defend the singer online l. They pointed out how, unlike what Monica said, Taylor has been a Knicks fan for a long time, as she was previously photographed wearing a New York Knicks jersey and has also supported the team for many years. Now, less than 24 hours later, Monica apologised and admitted:
“I said what I said. But here's the deal, if I am wrong – and I am wrong apparently – I misspoke. I did not know. Swifties, I appreciate your passion. I had not seen her here this year or last year. We just saw her in Cleveland with her fiancé. Obviously, Travis supports the Cavs. I did not know her Knicks loyalty, but shout out T-Swift. We can be united in orange and blue. It’s fine.”
The Knicks analyst also revealed that it was only after she made the remarks that she discovered evidence of Taylor Swift's long-standing support for the Knicks, including a picture of the singer wearing former Knicks star, Amar'e Stoudemire's jersey. Monica added, “I did not know. Apparently, I am wrong. I apologise. It's all good.”
Well, despite apologising, Monica McNutt claimed that “nobody cared” about her comments because of the Knicks' legendary comeback from being down 29 points to winning the game. It is worth mentioning that the Knicks' comeback was the biggest one in NBA Finals history to move within one win of the championship.
