Ravi Teja has been waiting for a film that will pull audiences back to the theatres. In Irumudi, Shiva Nirvana gives him exactly that chance. He plays ‘Trinath,’ a flawed but fiercely loving father in a rural village who raises his daughter to never stay silent.

When that lesson collides with a string of crimes against young girls, the story shifts from quiet family moments to tense, emotional drama. Backed by strong performances and a socially urgent theme, Irumudi tests whether emotion alone can bring Ravi Teja back.

After six straight flops since 2023, Ravi Teja needed more than just a hit. He needed a reset. Shiva Nirvana's Irumudi moves him away from his usual mass template and gives him a character that plays to his strengths as an actor, not just a star. There has been a lot of online chatter recently about how female characters are written in his films, and Irumudi directly addresses that by making girls and their safety the central concern of the film's story.

Set in the remote hilly village of Polluru, the film introduces us to ‘Trinath Rama Kasu,’ a banana farmer and ardent Ayyappa Swamy devotee played by Ravi Teja. He is a loving husband to ‘Kaveri,’ played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, and an intensely devoted father to 10-year-old ‘Manemma,’ played by Baby Nakshathra. ‘Trinath’ has a few flaws, including that he drinks a lot. But he lives by one rule he drills into his daughter from day one: never be afraid of the truth, and always speak it. He also treats every girl in the village as his own daughter and stands up for them.

That principle becomes the engine of the plot. A criminal gang in and around the village begins threatening young girls. The incidents pile up, and the film runs two tracks in parallel: a warm father-daughter emotional drama, and a tense crime-thriller about who is behind the attacks.

Shiva Nirvana uses the Ayyappa Swamy backdrop not as devotion for devotion’s sake, but as a cultural anchor. The two Ayyappa songs, especially the Mallepoola Pallaki sequence in the second half, are expected to receive loud applause in theatres. GV Prakash Kumar’s background score builds tension in the first half and adds weight to the emotional scenes, while Vishnu Sarma’s cinematography gives the rural setting a grounded, almost Malayalam-film aesthetic.

The big question going in was whether this gamble would work for Ravi Teja. The answer is yes. This is easily one of his most controlled and mature performances in the last decade. There are no forced mannerisms, no “Mass Maharaja” moments. What we get instead is vulnerability, anger, affection, and quiet intensity.

The scenes with Baby Nakshathra form the heart of the film, and their bond feels lived-in. She is natural and confident, and carries an emotionally demanding role without a false note. Priya Bhavani Shankar gets a crucial second-half sequence and delivers arguably the best performance of her career as a wife who is caring but often helpless. Sai Kumar as 'Guru Swamy' and Swasika in a darker role also add impact, and the supporting cast does its job without overplaying.

Where Irumudi works, and where it stumbles?

Shiva Nirvana’s biggest win is in keeping the focus tight. There are no unnecessary songs, no out-of-place comedy tracks, and no over-the-top action just for the sake of it. The first half steadily builds both emotion and suspense. We see ‘Trinath’s’ bond with his daughter, his equation with his wife, and the everyday dangers girls face while going to school.

Multiple characters are introduced as potential threats, keeping the curiosity alive for nearly two hours until a shocking twist is revealed. The writing around parenting is the film’s strongest asset. It contrasts two approaches: one father who says girls must adjust and stay silent, and ‘Trinath,’ who tells his daughter to speak up and that he will protect her. That contrast gives Irumudi its social relevance without turning preachy.

The climax is where the film hits hardest. It is emotionally devastating and beautifully executed, and it’s likely to leave even tough viewers teary-eyed. The father-daughter scenes throughout, combined with the social message at the core, give the film a lasting impact that goes beyond box office numbers.

But the film is not flawless. After the twist, the story slips into predictable territory for about 15 minutes before the final emotional block. Some developments feel old-school, and a few rural details like poor bus connectivity feel dated. Prawin Pudi’s editing is sharp in the first half, but the second hour could have been trimmed tighter.

The film shows realities that happen in society, and several scenes are intentionally uncomfortable. They leave a lump in your throat. Still, the positives outweigh the negatives. The performances of Ravi Teja and Baby Nakshathra are the biggest highlights. On the other hand, Shiva Nirvana proves that he can handle socially relevant material with sincerity.

Irumudi is not a regular commercial potboiler. It is a family action drama mixed with thriller elements, but its soul is emotional. If you are a parent, especially of a girl child, this film will make you reflect on how we raise children and what we expect from society. It has the potential to become a commercial success because the emotion connects, but more importantly, it gives Ravi Teja the credibility and respect he has been chasing.
