In a recent interaction, Honey Irani spoke about her failed marriage with Javed Akhtar and what led to their separation.
Javed Akhtar is a gem of Hindi cinema, beginning his career as a screenwriter, lyricist, and poet. Recipient of five national awards, Javed Akhtar was previously married to Honey Irani and had two kids, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani separated in 1978, and then he married Shabana Azmi on December 9, 1984.
In a recent interaction with Vickey Lalwani, Javed Akhtar’s first wife, Honey Irani, talked about her relationship with Javed Akhtar. She revealed that early success in their relationship spoiled their marriage. Since both she and Javed were young and were navigating life, and with sudden success, the relationship took a turn.
In the same interaction, Honey also revealed Javed’s drinking as the most difficult issue in their marriage. Speaking about the same, she said:
“His drinking was a major problem. Then he was meeting a lot of people, he was spending evenings out and those things increased a lot in between. We both were mature enough to understand that this is not working. He had tried to give up drinking many times.”
In her interview, Honey Irani said she and Javed had mutually decided to separate. Honey also claimed that she was too young and immature in the relationship. According to her, when the two saw their marriage falling apart, they decided that separating was the most sensible option.
Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani first met during the filming of Seeta Aur Geeta, where she was acting and he was on the writing team. Honey got attracted to Javed’s humble nature and wit. When Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar's docu-series, Angry Young Men, was released in 2024, the latter reflected on his marriage to Honey.
In one of the segments, he revealed that he felt guilty towards Honey and added that he was 60 to 70 per cent responsible for their failed marriage. Speaking about the same, he said:
“Honey is one person in the world, towards whom I feel guilty. And she is the only person. Sixty-seventy percent responsibility lies on my shoulders, for the failure of that marriage. If I had as much understanding as I have today, perhaps things would not have gone wrong. It is very difficult to accept, but that's how it is."
