His latest movie, Governor: The Silent Saviour, was released on June 12, 2026, and generated immense buzz on social media. Now, the film has made its way to the OTT world, and fans are rushing to watch the film. However, did you know that Governor is not a work of fiction but rather inspired by real events?
Set in 1990, the film follows a time when India was facing a massive Balance of Payments crisis. The Manoj Bajpayee starrer, Governor: The Silent Saviour, is not entirely fictional, but rather based on the life and work of former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor S. Venkitaramanan. For the unversed, he played a crucial role during India's historic 1991 balance of payments crisis.
The makers have described the film as an economic thriller based on real events that unfolded when the country was on the brink of a financial collapse. India's financial struggle is no secret; despite attaining freedom in 1947, it took the country several decades and multiple financial crises to get where it stands today. One such story is that of S. Venkitaramanan and how he brought India back from the depths of financial doom.
Before we dive into the details of Governor: The Silent Saviour, let us meet the man behind Manoj Bajpayee's political thriller, S. Venkitaramanan. He was the 18th Governor of the RBI and served in the Reserve Bank between December 1990 and December 1992. He later took charge of the central bank, where he was positioned as India's Finance Secretary.
He was regarded as one of the country's most experienced bureaucrats. For the unversed, S. Venkitaramanan was appointed RBI Governor at a time when India's foreign exchange reserves had fallen to dangerously low levels. This financial drop created an intense fear that the country could default on its international obligations. While everyone was worried, it was Venkitaramanan who came up with a plan to bring the country out of the slump.
While Governor: The Silent Saviour is inspired by S. Venkitaramanan's immense contribution, it is not a documentary. The film is based on the life and events of an actual incident, but much like other biographical dramas, the filmmakers have taken creative liberties to dramatise events and build its narrative.
Talking about the same, Manoj Bajpayee in a previous interview with MoneyControl revealed that the spine of the film was an underdog who was pushed to find a way through one of the country's most difficult financial situations. He stated:
"The spine of it (the film) was very simple. There is an underdog who is pushed into this crisis, and everybody is looking at him for some solution…a completely adverse situation he is pushed into for an out-of-the-box solution. So this was a nice, simple spine of the script which I just loved."
Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, Governor: The Silent Saviour is produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and co-produced by Aashin A. Shah. The film has been written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The film was released on Prime Video on July 24, 2026. However, it is currently not available for general subscribers, and viewers will have to pay an additional fee to watch it.
