In a new documentary about the Friends star, The One About Matthew Perry, his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, highlighted the incredible lengths he went to in order to stay sober and off drugs. For the uninitiated, Matthew, who was widely known for his role as 'Chandler Bing,' struggled with addiction for many years. She revealed that Matthew spent USD 7 million to stay sober. She said:
"All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them, and that certainly was Matthew's story. My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he couldn't quite fill. He spent USD 7 million trying to get sober. That's how seriously he took his disease."
However, Matthew’s efforts were in vain, and both Mia and some of his friends got emotional remembering his struggles with drinks and drugs. Addressing her decision to open up about her brother, Mia explained that it had taken time for her to feel ready to share the memories. She said:
"What it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life—to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction. As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I've devoted my life."
Mia shared that her brother had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and used to make people laugh and feel loved even in the darkest moments. Netflix shared that the upcoming docu-series The One About Matthew Perry will explore the full scope of who Matthew was: a comedic genius, a man who struggled with addiction, and an advocate in addiction and recovery.
The One About Matthew Perry is all set to premiere on Netflix on October 27, 2026. The documentary’s Emmy-winning director, Mary Robertson, also released a statement alongside the trailer. She said Matthew Perry was one of the greatest comedic geniuses of all time. Through many films, TV and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of 'Chandler Bing', Matthew made millions smile. The director shared that through the documentary, people will get to know the real Matthew.
Matthew Perry was a phenomenal actor. He was found unresponsive by his assistant Kenneth Iwamasa in a hot tub at his home in Pacific Palisades on October 28, 2023. The actor explained that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to him and asks for help, he would always be there for them. For the uninitiated, Matthew Perry's addiction to drugs began after he was prescribed painkillers following an accident in 1997. He became dependent on opioids, and over time his addiction became very serious. While he was filming Friends, his addiction became so severe that he used to take 55 pills a day.
