Johnny Depp had offered his Los Angeles home to Eric Dane during his final days with his family. Here's what made the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor make the special gesture.
Eric Dane, best known for his role as 'Dr. Mark Sloan, on Grey's Anatomy, and Cal Jacobs, on Euphoria, have passed away. According to People, the 53-year-old actor's death on February 19, 2026, was confirmed by his family. After his demise, new details surfaced on the internet, which revealed that the late actor had spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, at Johnny Depp's Los Angeles home. While Eric was fighting for his life in the last days of his life, Johnny offered him a place to stay free of charge. Here's why.
When Eric Dane's health deteriorated rapidly in 2026, he had to stay with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and daughters. According to the BBC and the Times of India, Johnny Depp offered one of his Los Angeles properties, reportedly a Hollywood Hills estate, to Eric to stay in during the final days of his life. It was a flexible arrangement for the late actor, who did not have to pay rent and could focus on his treatment and time with family without financial strain.
According to sources cited by The Times of India, Johnny Depp told Eric he could "pay what you can- or nothing at all." For those unaware, Johnny and Eric were longtime acquaintances through mutual friends in the industry. Moreover, the gesture by the Pirates of the Caribbean actor reportedly remained private until after Dane's death. E! News noted that the move helped ease both emotional and logistical burdens as Eric Dane needed increasing medical support in his final months.
Furthermore, Eric was not alone at home. His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, remained closely involved in his care despite their 2017 separation. The former couple shared two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. According to People, Rebecca played a significant role in coordinating medical care for Eric as his condition worsened. Eventually, his family confirmed that he was surrounded by loved ones when he passed.
Eric Dane was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a progressive, fatal neurological condition that destroys motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. According to the BBC and Wikipedia, Eric Dane initially noticed weakness in his right hand before losing full function in his arm within months. Later, he was seen using a wheelchair at the end of 2025 and had difficulty speaking and swallowing. Recently, in the early days of 2026, Eric was largely bedridden, and in February 2026, his family confirmed that he died following a "courageous battle with ALS."
Before his death, Eric Dane made one of his final public appearances to record a deeply emotional farewell message through the Netflix series, Famous Last Words. According to TODAY.com, the 50-minute segment was filmed in November 2025 and included advice directed at his daughters. He encouraged them to live in the present, choose friends wisely, fall in love with something meaningful, and fight life's battles. Sharing his love for his daughters, he said:
"Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."
Rest in peace, Eric Dane,
