Justine Wilson met Elon Musk while they were students attending Queen's University in Ontario, Canada. Elon was one year senior to Justine. When Justine was in her first year of college, she met Elon for the first time. It was Elon who asked Justine out, but she turned him down. However, the trillionaire didn’t lose hope and kept on trying to woo his then ladylove, Justine. Later, she reconsidered their relationship and moved to California to be with Elon.
In her post-separation Marie Claire essay, Justin Wilson recounted the days when her then-boyfriend, Elon, admired her ambition. Justin mentioned that one day she and Elon paid a visit to a bookstore when she shared her dream with Elon of becoming an author and seeing her books on the shelves one day. Unlike other people who laughed at her dream, Elon took her dream seriously and was highly impressed with it. She wrote:
"Once, in the bookstore together, I pointed to a shelf and said, 'One day I want my own books to go right there.' I had said this before to a girlfriend, who laughed and spun on her heel. But Elon not only took me seriously, he seemed impressed. It was the first time that a boy found my sense of ambition — instead of my long hair or narrow waist — attractive."
In her post-separation Marie Claire essay, Justin Wilson admitted that there was a time when she could not think about a life with Elon Musk. She revealed that two months after their marriage, she had signed the postnuptial agreement as she trusted her then-husband, Elon. Justine stated that although there were warning signs in her relationship with Elon, she kept ignoring them and blindly trusted Elon. Recalling their initial days of marriage, Justine wrote:
"Two months after our wedding, I simply signed the postnuptial agreement. I trusted my husband — why else had I married him? — and I told myself it didn't matter. We were soul mates. We would never get divorced. A life without Elon was unthinkable. Here were warning signs. As we danced at our wedding reception, Elon told me, 'I am the alpha in this relationship.' I shrugged it off."
In the same essay, Justine explained that Elon grew up in a male-dominated culture of South Africa and his will to compete and dominate that made him successful at the workplace, followed him at home as well. Justine shared that she felt Elon often believed his opinions were more important than hers and regularly pointed out what he thought she was doing wrong. For those unaware, Justine and Elon got married in 2000 and parted ways in 2008. She wrote:
"He had grown up in the male-dominated culture of South Africa, and the will to compete and dominate that made him so successful in business did not magically shut off when he came home. This, and the vast economic imbalance between us, meant that in the months following our wedding, a certain dynamic began to take hold. 'I am your wife,' I told him repeatedly, 'not your employee.' 'If you were my employee,' he said just as often, 'I would fire you.'"
