While his professional life with the Buffalo Bills seems fine, he has recently come into the spotlight because of developments in his personal life. For those unaware, he recently lost his son, Ed Oliver III. Fans have been left heartbroken because of the news. Amid this, an investigation into his son's death has officially been closed.
Ed Oliver has recently missed several practice sessions with his team. He also missed out during the Buffalo Bills pre-season win against the Cleveland Browns on August 22, 2026. Initially, the reason for Ed’s absence was believed to be an injury. But soon it was revealed that there was much more going on behind the scenes.
Oliver reportedly lost his 2-year-old son, Ed Oliver III, in June 2026. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to an in-progress life-in-danger call on June 28, 2026. Once they arrived, the deputies were told that the parents of the child had found him unresponsive in their home’s swimming pool.
Following this, the boy was taken by an ambulance to a hospital located in Houston. After reaching there, the 2-year-old was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.
It is worth mentioning that neither Ed nor his family has released any statement to confirm the news of the tragedy. However, when the speculations of his son’s death began spreading online, videos showing Ed speaking to officers outside his home also surfaced. The video also captured him breaking down in tears after the incident.
Now, in a new update, the Harris County Sheriff's Office revealed that the death of Ed's son was accidental. While speaking with TMZ, they shared that their Homicide Division has closed the case. No charges have been filed against the NFL star or anyone else.
Ed Oliver and his family initially kept the news of the 2-year-old’s death under wraps. Fans only got to know about the tragedy when Bills GM Brandon Beane offered his condolences to the athlete. In a statement that he had shared, he said:
“On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
During a press conference on August 22, 2026, Bills quarterback Josh Allen also talked about the tragedy. He expressed his disappointment at how the news was handled online. He began by saying thank you to all those who had known about the death of Ed's son and gave him time to mourn instead of speculating. He added:
"First off, I want to say thank you to the ones that knew about it and allowed him to have his moment and his time. It’s very sad. And, you know how it came out, it makes me very, very sad and angry at the same time."
Allen claimed that as Ed’s teammate, he and the rest of the team's main focus is to support him as best as possible and help the family get through the unimaginable loss. He said:
"As a teammate of Ed and as someone in this locker room, all we can do is love on him. There's nothing that you can say to make the situation any better except being there for him in whatever ways he needs us."
