Drew Carey has been hogging the headlines over his criticism of Spencer Pratt's run for Los Angeles mayor in a blunt social media post. The Price is Right host has created a buzz ever since he shared several posts calling Pratt a "scammer". Amid that, netizens have grown interested in his personal life, including his relationship with Hollywood sex and family therapist, Amie Harwick.
For the unversed, Amie Harwick was a well-known therapist who passed away in 2020 after being brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend. So, as Drew Carey continues to hog the headlines, let's take a look at what happened to her.
The Price is Right host took to his Threads account to encourage LA residents to reconsider who they're going to vote for before the June primaries. Drew Carey directly mentioned Spencer Pratt in his post. For the unversed, Pratt has been a vocal champion for LA residents since losing his home in the 2025 Palisades wildfire. He stated:
"Anyone who votes for, or endorses Spencer Pratt for Mayor of LA needs to get their head out of their a--. I understand being angry/unsatisfied, but at least get behind someone competent and not some serial scammer without a soul or moral compass. F--k this guy already."
Amie Harwick was a prominent Hollywood marriage and family therapist. She met Drew Carey during a Hollywood party in the summer of 2017, and it didn't take long for the duo to start going out. Their whirlwind romance soon led to Carey getting down on one knee in February 2018. However, their bliss ended months later, with an insider confirming their breakup later in November 2018.
However, apart from her relationship with Carey, Harwick was also known for her clinical work and her self-help book, The New Sex Bible for Women: The Complete Guide to Sexual Self-Awareness and Intimacy, and regularly made media and podcast appearances. Robert Coshland spoke with A&E Crime + Investigation and reflected on how well Harwick was doing before their breakup and was quoted as saying:
"She was very excited about settling into her house, and she was working on a second book. She was talking to some producers who were going to pitch a show about her dating life. She was always full of crazy adventures. I feel like she lived five lives' worth of lives in her short stint."
According to Robert Coshland, Amie and her group of girlfriends were out celebrating Valentine's Day hours before she found herself face-to-face with her former boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, who broke into her Hollywood Hills home, strangled her and fatally threw her from the third-floor balcony, according to Los Angeles police. For the unversed, they were in a toxic relationship for over 18 months from 2009 until 2011. According to CBS News, the software engineer, who posed himself as a nightlife photographer, "suffocated me, punched me, slammed my head on the ground, kicked me and threatened that things would get worse."
Afraid for her life, Amie Harwick filed two restraining orders against Pursehouse in 2011 and 2012. However, neither was still in effect when he broke into her house. However, Robert Coshland revealed that she wasn't one to dwell on her past, rarely speaking of her past relationship. He recalled how "she never really mentioned him until this incident, where she had gone on a trip, and she suspected he had broken into her apartment." For the uninitiated, Harwick came home to find the computer wiped and the picture frames smashed. 48 Hours further reported an unsettling instance, where she accused Pursehouse of sending nude photos of her to an employer, costing her the job and her mother, Penny Harwick.
It seems like there were signs that things were dangerous almost a month before Amie Harwick's passing. According to reports, on January 16, 2020, Harwick ran into Pursehouse by chance at the XBIZ Awards in Los Angeles, where he was photographing adult film celebrities on the red carpet. He got livid upon seeing her and alleged she had ruined his life, according to the Los Angeles Times. A month later, Pursehouse broke into Harwick's Hollywood Hills home and waited for her to return home and murdered her less than two hours after Valentine's Day.
It was Amie Harwick's roommate who overheard the struggle and ran to a neighbour's to call 911. By the time police arrived, Pursehouse had fled, and Harwick was pronounced dead at the hospital. According to the LA County Medical Examiner's records, she died from blunt force injuries to the head and torso. When police questioned Robert Coshland about who would've wanted to harm Harwick, he had "a gut feeling it was Gareth". Later, DNA evidence, surveillance footage and an email Harwick wrote to herself recounting the distressing confrontation a month earlier all pointed to Pursehouse's sole involvement.
He was taken into police custody the day of the murder but was released shortly after posting USD 2 million bail. Authorities rearrested him on February 19, 2020, on a felony no-bail warrant, according to A&E Crime + Investigation. While he initially pleaded not guilty to murder and burglary, both in the first-degree, he was later convicted on the charges in September 2023 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, KABC-TV reported. Robert Coshland reflected on his conviction and said:
"Would I have liked to see him tormented to death and eaten alive by ants? Yes, but this is the best you can hope for in California."
