Before her death on August 25, 2026, Dolly Parton had been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues. The Jolene singer had previously disclosed a kidney stone issue in September 2025, which led her to skip the launch of Dollywood's new Nightflight Expedition ride.
The announcement for the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee park's new attraction was held on September 17, 2025. Parton appeared via a video message where she explained that a kidney stone had caused complications and led to an infection. She said her doctor had advised her not to travel at the time and to take a few days to recover. She added that although she could not be there in person, she was with everyone in spirit and had been looking forward to the event.
On May 4, 2026, the country icon shared a rare health update through a lengthy Instagram Reel, in which she also spoke about her husband Carl Thomas Dean's death in March 2025. She thanked fans for their continued love and support over the past year, noting that she still had some healing to do but was on her way to recovery.
In the video, she said the good news was that she was responding well to medications and treatments and was improving daily. The bad news, she said, was that it would take some time before she could return to performing on stage, as the medications left her feeling swimmy-headed. She jokingly remarked that she could not risk feeling dizzy while carrying banjos and guitars in five-inch heels, along with heavy rhinestone outfits, big hair and her big personality.
Dolly Parton further compared her health journey to restoring a vintage car to make it better than ever, saying that when the hood was lifted, it was found that her engine needed rebuilding, her transmission was slipping, her oil pan was leaking, her muffler was damaged, and her shocks and pistons needed replacement. She added that her spark plugs also needed changing because she could not afford to lose her spark, and quipped that while she knew she was still crazy, nothing had been said about her mental health.
Dolly Parton built one of the longest and most decorated careers in American music. Born in 1946 as the fourth of 12 children in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, she began writing songs as a child and recorded her first single Puppy Love at the age of 11 before debuting at the Grand Ole Opry at 13.
