Dolly Parton took her last breath on August 25, 2026 (ET) after a brief battle with cancer. While she has left behind a vast legacy, her children are not part of it. Throughout her life as a country music superstar, Dolly was candid about her and her husband, Carl Dean's, decision not to have any children despite their nearly 60 years of marriage.
For the uninitiated, Carl Dean passed away at age 82 in March 2025. Back in December 1980, Dolly Parton talked about her decision not to have any children at the premiere of 9 to 5 and said that she doesn't "know that I want a child." The 11-time Grammy winner noted that she reached that conclusion after growing up in a family of 12 kids.
Much of Dolly Parton's life was spent helping to raise several of her younger brothers and sisters, even after she married Carl Dean in 1966. She revealed that her nieces and nephews affectionately called her "Aunt Granny" and referred to Carl as "Uncle Peepaw." However, when it came to having kids of their own, she wasn't much concerned. She reflected on the same and said:
"But if some time we want children, then we'll — if I'm too old to have 'em or can't have 'em for some reason — then we'll adopt them."
A few years later, in 1985, at the young age of 38, Dolly Parton underwent a partial hysterectomy. The surgery left her unable to carry children. For the unversed, the singer had undergone the procedure after struggling for years with endometriosis. However, although having their own kids was no longer an option, Dolly and Carl Dean never regretted the decision. In a conversation with Rolling Stone in 2003, she said:
"The older we get, the gladder we are that we don't have them now, because we take care of a lot of other people's kids. We buy new cars for all the nieces and nephews that graduate, we send any to college that want to go."
She further discussed the lack of children during a 2014 interview. Talking to the Guardian, Dolly Parton said that while they sometimes wondered about having kids, in the end they were "glad" it never happened for them. She was quoted as saying:
"My husband and I, when we first got married, we thought about if we had kids, what would they look like? Would they be tall — because he's tall? Or would they be little squats like me? We talked about it, and we dreamed it, but it wasn't meant to be. Now that we're older? We're glad. I would have been a great mother, I think. I would probably have given up everything else because I would've felt guilty about that if I'd left them [to work our tour]."
Dolly Parton shared that everything would have changed if they had children and she wouldn't have been a star. She further mirrored the sentiments in a 2023 interview with Saga magazine, telling the outlet that she would have "stayed home" instead of pursuing her career, and in a 2025 interview with PEOPLE, telling the magazine she was "thankful that [she] got to see [her] dreams come true."
In 2017, during her appearance on Today, Dolly Parton said that she was okay with not having kids. She added that it was probably a part of God's plan so everyone's children could be hers, and that's exactly what happened.
