Dhurandhar is set against the backdrop of the IC-814 hijacking in 1999 and the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. The film follows 'Ajay Sanyal' (played by R Madhavan), who plans a mission against Pakistan and for the same he recruits a 20-year-old boy, 'Hamza' (played by Ranveer Singh) from Punjab. After carefully understanding his potential, he trains the boy with weapons for the mission.

For those who don’t know, since months, Dhurandhar was making headlines for being a biopic of late Major Mohit Sharma. And a week before the theatrical release, late Mohit Sharma’s brother had clarified the same with the director of the film, Aditya Dhar. In response, the filmmaker had shared:
"Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of brave heart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family."
