The Oppenheimer, The Santa Clause, and Numb3rs actor said he had become "frustrated, fed up, fried" with the business and no longer felt the same connection to professional acting.
While Krumholtz later clarified that he isn't quitting acting completely, he wants some time to reconsider what he wants from his career. As he moves away from the spotlight, the attention has shifted to his personal life and the family life he has built with his wife and two kids.
David Krumholtz has been married to his wife, Vanessa Britting, since 2010. Vanessa is a former actress who has worked in projects like Without a Trace, The Unit, and Desperate Housewives. She also appeared alongside Krumholtz on Numb3rs.
David and Vanessa's love story dates back to the early 2000s. While the exact details of their initial days together remain under wraps, the couple reportedly dated for several years before tying the knot. After getting engaged in 2008, the pair exchanged vows on May 22, 2010, at The Plaza Hotel in New York City.
The couple has generally kept their family life private, despite both having careers in entertainment. Krumholtz and Britting have two children, daughter Pemma Mae, born in 2014, and son Jonas, born in 2016. A year after their son's birth, the family moved from Los Angeles to New Jersey, and they have been living there since.
In 2011, Krumholtz was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Shortly after marrying Britting, the actor found a lump on his neck that led to the diagnosis. He underwent a thyroidectomy followed by radioactive iodine treatment and was declared cancer-free in January 2012. The treatment had lasting effects on his health, including difficulties related to weight and thyroid hormone replacement.
Later, the Santa Claus star faced yet another health crisis after he started using pot again following a long break. In a March 2025 interview with Page Six, David shared that he eventually became a daily cannabis user and developed cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). As a result, he suffered from repeated and severe vomiting, as is common among long-term pot users.
He described the episodes as extremely dangerous and said he "almost died" several times. He explained how "you can blow out the receptors, like blowing out an engine, making it that every time you smoke pot — not every time, but if you smoke it enough — you get wildly, dangerously nauseous... I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I almost died a couple of times."
Krumholtz has since stopped using cannabis and has spoken publicly about CHS in an effort to raise awareness of the condition.
Krumholtz began acting as a teenager and quickly built a brilliant profile. In his decades-long career, he became a fan favorite as Bernard the Head Elf in The Santa Clause, later appearing in The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clauses. His other credits include 10 Things I Hate About You, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Superbad, Ray, Serenity, and Sausage Party.
In 2023, Krumholtz appeared in Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning Oppenheimer as physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi. He later joined the cast of Supergirl. But now, the actor is choosing to step away. Through a series of social media posts (later deleted) on August 17, 2026 (ET), Krumholtz announced that he is taking an "indefinite break" from showbiz, saying that the profession has "lost its gleam." He wrote on Threads:
"I kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day. It’s been something I’ve been petrified to do for years. Specifically, the fear was that I’d go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game. But I sent the definitive email. And gotta say, a huge wave of relief washed over me. Not sure what I’m going to do for money instead, or how I’m going to do it, but I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn’t fathom the weight of until it was gone. Frustrated, fed up, fried."
Amid the professional burnout, the actor added in a later post that he was "not quitting entirely". Instead, he plans to take some time out to focus on himself as he searches for a potentially "higher calling."
Whatever decision he takes, David Krumholtz has his beloved wife by his side.
