What happens in the horror series Crystal Lake? (Spoiler alert)

Before diving deep into the storyline of Crystal Lake, let’s meet the most famous character, 'Jason Voorhees'. He is often seen in an iconic hockey mask. His distinctive way of walking, his signature sounds, his extraordinary supernatural strength, and his habit of killing sexually active teenagers have made 'Jason' a horror legend over the past 46 years. The prequel Crystal Lake explores 'Jason's' origins and his mother, 'Pamela Voorhees'.

Crystal Lake is an eight-episode TV series and is set in the early 1970s, before the events of the original Friday the 13th movie, released in 1980. The series focuses on 'Pamela'. In the original movie, 'Pamela' was played by Betsy Palmer. The story of Crystal Lake follows what happens after 'Pamela's' son, 'Jason Voorhees', supposedly drowns.

In the original movie, 'Pamela' is revealed to be the person behind the murders. At the end, she is decapitated, and in the second movie, her son 'Jason' becomes the main killer. The franchise Friday the 13th has shown 'Jason Voorhees' as an extraordinary human being. And now Crystal Lake introduces a mysterious project called Argonaut. The series reveals that 'Jason' was a sweet little boy who wanted to make friends. Unfortunately, other children bullied him because of the unusual shape of his head.

Crystal Lake also introduces 'Jason's' father, 'Elias Wittering', who plays a major role in the experiments that change 'Jason's' life. The project Argonaut is run by Bellflower, and 'Elias' is involved in the research, which subjected 'Jason' to treatments intended to make humans survive extreme conditions. For those unaware, when 'Pamela' was pregnant, she joined an experimental medical programme called Project Argonaut. She believed the treatment would help her pregnancy, but the doctors were hiding the truth from her.

In one scene of Crystal Lake, a doctor injects a huge needle through 'Pamela's' stomach, apparently injecting unknown substances into the area surrounding the unborn baby. 'Pamela' is also seen taking pills during her pregnancy. Project Argonaut, which began during the Cold War, had the goal of creating a genetically engineered human who could survive nuclear fallout and other extreme conditions. To achieve this, they experimented on pregnant women and babies, exposing them to dangerous treatments and subjecting them to cruel tests.

Later, when 'Jason' was born with physical abnormalities, 'Elias' confronted the researchers. Instead of stopping the experiments, he became more deeply involved and eventually rose to a leadership position within the programme. He also took 'Jason' to the laboratory after the baby nearly drowned in a bathtub. Those experiments explain 'Jason's' unusual ability to recover from injuries and return stronger, as well as his rapid physical growth after the drowning.

Crystal Lake ending explained (Spoiler alert)

Both 'Jason' and 'Pamela' survive. However, 'Elias' dies. He gets killed by his own son, 'Jason'. At the end of Crystal Lake, a larger figure wearing a sack over his head appears. He is none other than 'Jason'. The ending leaves room for another season. However, it is still not confirmed. At the end of season 1, a group of young people sit together around a fire and tell stories about 'Jason Voorhees', the scary killer from Friday the 13th.
