Collin Gosselin is once again revisiting his alleged painful past with the publication of his tell-all memoir. In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood was released on October 13, 2026. The 22-year-old claims his mother, Kate Gosselin, confined him in a locked basement room and kept his seven siblings away from him.

Collin's allegations have renewed scrutiny of the family's complicated history, years after their seemingly perfect lives became public on Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Collin Gosselin details Kate's alleged abuse in a locked basement room where no other child was allowed

In his memoir, Collin describes what he characterizes as a frightening and isolating period of his childhood. He alleges that he was kept in an unfinished basement room with cinderblock walls and a cement floor, which he refers to as a "basement cell." According to his account, the room was locked, and his siblings were not allowed to interact with him.

Collin also makes disturbing claims about how he was restrained. He alleges that his wrists and ankles were zip-tied after he tried to run away. His mother once allegedly dragged him by his ear across the floor to the other side of the room. Speaking to ABC News, he recalled:

"My teacher saw ... and then I talked to my guidance counselor, and I told them about it. And my mom was not very happy that I spoke about that."

Collin's recollections add to a long-running family dispute that has played out publicly since the Gosselins became reality television stars. The family rose to prominence through Jon & Kate Plus 8, which followed Kate and her then-husband, Jon Gosselin, raising their twins and sextuplets. Collin now describes the childhood presented on television as a misleading picture of what he experienced behind closed doors.

Jon Gosselin once said Kate tried to 'erase' Collin from the family

Long before Collin's memoir was announced, Jon Gosselin had publicly criticized Kate's decision to place their son in a behavioral health institution in 2016. In multiple interviews, Jon alleged that Kate isolated their son from his siblings and attempted to remove him from family life altogether.

Jon claimed Kate was "trying to erase him," arguing that Collin had effectively disappeared from both the family's daily life and the public image presented through their reality television brand. During his 2019 appearance on the Dr. Oz Show, Jon scathingly criticized his ex-wife for sending Collin away for a behavioral rehabilitation program. He alleged at the time:

"Kate institutionalized him without a diagnosis and then created a diagnosis. He did not need to be in an institution. Just because he was a difficult child did not mean he needed to be sent away against my will, against my rights. I did not know where he went. It took me two and a half years to find him. It took me another year to get him out."

Jon also accused his ex-wife of creating what he described as parental and sibling alienation, alleging that Collin was prevented from maintaining relationships with several of his brothers and sisters. Collin, who was just 15 at the time, was allegedly banned from seeing his other siblings.

Collin sends a pointed message to his estranged family

In his memoir, the 22-year-old reflected on his years of estrangement from his siblings, saying he remains in contact with only one of them, his sister Hannah. He has had no contact with the other six. His account suggests that the family separation remains a source of pain. He has expressed a desire to reconnect with his siblings, making clear that he still loves them despite the distance between them.

He remains in contact with only his sister Hannah, who moved in with him and their father, Jon, after leaving Kate's home. His six other siblings, including twins Madelyn and Cara and sextuplets Alexis, Aaden, Leah and Joel, remain estranged from him.

Speaking with ABC News' Juju Chang, Collin said he would welcome the chance to rebuild those relationships, while acknowledging that the years apart have changed the family. He also shared a direct message for his siblings, emphasizing that his feelings for them have not disappeared despite the conflict. He said:

"No matter what's happened or what was said, no matter how things look from the outside, I love you. I always have and always will."

In his memoir In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, Collin says he hopes that sharing his experiences will help bring attention to child abuse and the challenges faced by children who struggle to make their voices heard. Kate, meanwhile, has denied allegations of abuse. In earlier statements, she said Collin's placement in a facility was connected to concerns about his safety and behavioral and mental health challenges.
