However, her lawyer has now revealed that just hours before she woke up, they were preparing to take her off life support as they were made to understand she was "brain dead".
Christa Pike's lawyer, Randy Spivey, spoke with the media outside the Davidson County Chancery Court on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and shared some insight into what happened in the days following Christa's hospitalization. He revealed that days before the inmate woke up, he received some upsetting news about his client. Randy recalled how despite surviving a botched execution six days prior, the decision had been made to remove her from life support.
For those who don't know, during Christa Pike's botched execution, she was injected with two fatal doses of pentobarbital. However, due to some reason, it failed, which led the inmate to be hospitalized. Randy Spivey recalled that on Monday, October 5, 2026, they were made to understand that Christa was brain dead and hence the decision was made to take her off life support. Nonetheless, she woke up the very next day. He said:
"On Monday night it was our understanding that Christa was brain dead and that life support would be removed the next day. But on Tuesday, to the shock of everyone, Christa woke up and began talking."
Randy Spivey added that he does not "have an explanation for what happened between Monday night and Tuesday morning," and noted that Christa Pike "has a long road to recovery." The news has once again shocked everyone.
During the same media conference, Christa Pike's lawyer revealed that she has a blood clot in her arm and is suffering from pneumonia. Randy Spivey added that she also cannot swallow, which means she has not eaten in a week. While he admitted he was not in the room when Christa woke up on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, he was told what happened later. He said:
"I don't want to speculate too much, but from our understanding the first thing she said when she woke up was, 'Where am I, and who are you?'"
While he declined to answer specific medical questions, Randy Spivey did mention that she is often "spaced out" for extended periods and still confused about a number of things. He also confirmed that Christa Pike was "very aware that the state tried to execute her." He added that they have already filed a case against the state on their client's behalf and spoke out after the first hearing in those proceedings.
After hearing arguments for just over an hour on Wednesday, October 8, 2026, Chancellor I'Ashea L. Myles ruled that the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) must preserve all evidence relating to Christa Pike's botched execution that took place on September 30, 2026. The court has instructed TDOC to preserve all physical evidence, including trash, needles, medical supplies, gurneys, and the IV lines.
She has also asked for all surveillance footage, handwritten notes or logs, photographs, and emails to be preserved, along with any encrypted messages. Chancellor I'Ashea L. Myles has also ordered TDOC to preserve all information and communications related to the execution. She also told them to preserve the manuals and guidelines used in preparation for delivering a lethal injection.
