Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank first met in 1992 at the Hollywood Athletic Club party. According to PEOPLE, Swank was accompanying Leonardo DiCaprio and crossed paths with Lowe there. Swank once spoke about their relationship and revealed how, after their meeting, it turned into a relationship that led to marriage, and it all started with "love at first sight".
The couple got married in 1997 and were together for nearly nine years before announcing their separation in 2006. Swank later discussed the abuse in an interview with Vanity Fair. The P.S. I Love You actress revealed that Lowe had struggled with addiction for three years. She added that she had never expected her husband to keep something so important from her.
While addiction played a massive role in Swank and Lowe's divorce, the latter made sure that she didn't portray it as the sole reason for their split. He added that he was extremely grateful for the role Swank played during a difficult time in his life. He called Swank the love of his life, and despite the end of their marriage, he always spoke about Swank with considerable affection. According to a CBS News report, he said he couldn't simply erase their relationship from his life.
He said he would continue to "love her" even though their marriage had ended. Although their relationship did not survive the challenges they faced, Lowe continued to recognize its importance and Swank's support during his recovery. Years after overcoming that difficult chapter, Lowe is now facing another deeply painful loss.
