A few days after the movie, Bugonia hit the theatres, multiple users had shared their reviews on X (formerly Twitter). One user commented, "Bugonia is a great movie and, properly interpreted, the most subversively anti-populist I've ever seen." Another user shared, "#Bugonia is a strange, albeit honest, examination of the human condition and a look at how trauma can dictate decision-making. At the same time, this is an often-insane dark comedy that kept me on the edge of my seat and provided one of the most fascinating experiences of the year." A third fan wrote, "Finally watched Bugonia (I’ll see anything with Jesse Plemons) and oddly I don’t know if I liked it or not. Well acted, held my attention, but not a satisfying ending IMO."
Days before the release of the movie, director, Yorgos Lanthimos had opened up about Emma Stone shaving her head for the role. He revealed that even though it was mentioned in the script, the actress had a little bit of hesitation; however, she felt free after her head was shaved. The director shared:
"I mean, it was in the script, so I didn’t even have to tell her. She read it first, and she had the slightest hesitation just before, not hesitation to do it, but she had kind of a knot in her stomach. But it happened. Thankfully, we did it. We only had one shot to achieve it. And then she felt great. She saw herself and she really loved it, and she felt very free."
