Bondi Beach shooter, Naveed Akram's mother, dismissed reports of his involvement in the crime and revealed she spoke to him hours before the attack.
The tragic shooting incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has left the city devastated, with at least 15 people dead. Apart from the death, many people sustained serious injuries after the attack. For the unversed, two gunmen opened fire during an event marking the first day of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, allegedly targeting the Jewish community.
It was a religious event to mark the beginning of the eight-day Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The suspects were identified as Naveed Akram, 24, and his father, Sajid Akram, 50. As per the reports, the father-son duo rained bullets from long-barrelled guns for at least 10 minutes.
As per a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the suspects, Naveed and Sajid, informed their family that they were heading on a South Coast fishing trip. Naveed’s mother, Verena, revealed that her son spoke to her moments before the attack and revealed that he went to Jervis Bay with his father for a weekend fishing trip. Asper her:
“He rings me up [on Sunday] and says, ‘Mum, I just went for a swim. I went scuba diving. We’re going … to eat now, and then this morning, and we’re going to stay home now because it’s very hot.'”
While the heinous attack has left everyone shocked and devastated, Naveed’s mother, Verena is in denial of her son’s involvement in the attack. Naveed was caught at the crime scene. He was detained at the shooting spot and is now in custody, while his father, Sajid, was shot dead after he allegedly opened fire. Hours after the terror attack, Naveed’s images with a firearm went viral.
However, his mother couldn’t believe it was her son, as she claimed he was innocent. Sharing her disbelief and denial, she said:
“He doesn't have a firearm. He doesn't even go out. He doesn't mix with friends. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't go to bad places ... he goes to work, he comes home, he goes to exercise, and that's it. Anyone would wish to have a son like my son ... he's a good boy."
Naveed worked as a bricklayer, but was laid off months back when the company he worked for became insolvent. His father, Sajid, owned a fruit shop. They lived with Verena, Naveed's brother (20), and a sister (22) in a house in western Sydney that they bought last year. An investigation is underway to understand the motive behind the attack. At the time of the attack, a crowd of about 1,000 people had gathered at the beach for the Jewish festival.
