The tragedy occurred while she and her family were on vacation, and she was trying to capture some memorable moments of the tour. At that time, she reportedly stepped away from a safe mountain path to take a photograph, as reported by Italian outlet Corriere della Sera.
Michaelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva was believed to have left the marked route to reach a panoramic spot in the Dolomites to take a photo of the scenic beauty when the tragedy took place. The American tourist reportedly lost her footing, falling approximately 980 feet (300 meters) from an exposed section of the Dolomites mountain, losing her life.
The incident took place when the tour party, who were with Michelle's family, were walking to a cable car station to take them up to a famous restaurant on the summit of Sass Pordoi. According to local outlets like il Dolomiti, the pass is easily accessible by cable car but difficult to walk due to its steepness and loose gravel, which makes it hard to keep one's footing.
Michaelle's family witnessed the deceased American tourist's horrific fall, and her sister made a last attempt to save her by raising the alarm from the rugged, pine-covered terrain, immediately after which emergency services arrived. The emergency service confirmed that its Alta Val di Fassa team and an air ambulance were dispatched after the 112 control center received the call from Michaelle's sister.
A mountain rescuer who was already nearby reached the scene quickly and provided the helicopter crew with the exact coordinates to help them reach faster. Medical personnel were lowered onto the mountainside at around 12.30 p.m., but despite their best efforts, Michaelle was pronounced dead at the scene on October 17, 2026.
The heartbreaking incident drew global attention a few days later, with people expressing condolences to her family. Michaelle's untimely death also reignited the debate about how obsession with taking photos prevents people from living in the moment and makes them lose awareness of their surroundings and potential dangers.
Michaelle and her family were exploring the mountains some 9,000 feet above sea level with the other tour members when tragedy struck. After the incident, her relatives were airlifted to Canazei, where her body was brought later following the recovery mission.
Regarding Michaelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, she was reportedly born in Guatemala and later moved to Florida. According to local media, Corriere della Sera, she graduated from Brigham Young University and most recently worked at a firm in Miami.
As for Michaelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva's profession, she was reportedly a communications manager. She had also worked in multiple volunteer projects. In 2025, she moved to Rome to work as a digital nomad in consulting; however, it hasn't been reported whether Michaelle was still living in the Italian capital at the time of the tragic accident.
