The two are now one of tennis’ most talked-about couples. From an early morning coffee to getting engaged in 2024, their journey has been calm, real, and full of support. Even this week, while both were competing in Melbourne, their story continued to grow in front of fans.
Alex de Minaur gave fans a strong performance at the Australian Open this week. He beat, Hamad Medjedovic in four sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, to move into the third round. His next match is against, Frances Tiafoe, which is expected to be a big one. At the same time, Katie Boulter had a tough result. She lost to Belinda Bencic in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. De Minaur was in the stands watching her match, showing support even when things did not go her way.
Just a few days before that, Boulter shared a picture from an event linked to de Minaur’s foundation. She wrote, “The best night supporting you.” De Minaur replied in the comments, “Well you are cute,” keeping things light and personal. Both players are busy with their own matches, but they still show up for each other. That balance is something fans have noticed again this week.
Their story did not start in a big or planned way. It began with a sweet moment. Katie Boulter said she first knew about, Alex de Minaur through mutual friends. She had heard he was “a good, humble guy.” Then one day, they were staying at the same hotel and ran into each other early in the morning. She told The Sydney Morning Herald:
“One day, when we were staying in the same hotel, we bumped into each other at six in the morning and ended up getting a coffee. From that moment, I knew I was in it for the long haul.”
That one coffee changed everything. De Minaur also shared how he felt about her. He liked her “smiling, happy” nature. Their simple chat turned into a deep emotional bond between them. There was no big setup, no dramatic first meeting. Just two pro tennis players, one morning, and a conversation that stayed with them.
Soon after they started talking, the world went into lockdown during COVID-19. That made things harder, as they were in different countries. De Minaur was in Spain, while Boulter was in the UK. They could not meet, so they stayed connected through calls. He told The Sydney Morning Herald:
“I was in Spain under house arrest and she was in the UK, so we had months of talking on FaceTime. I think I realised this was becoming something special when I found myself wanting to talk to her all the time. Her companionship was something I’d been looking for: it gave me a sense of peace.”
Those months built their bond. In March 2021, they made their relationship public on Instagram. Boulter shared a picture to mark one year together. She wrote, “Not sure how you’ve put up with me this long. Happy one year.” Their relationship grew slowly but strongly, even when they were far apart.
As both continued their tennis careers, they often played at the same tournaments. That made it easier for them to support each other. During 2022 Wimbledon Championships, de Minaur spoke about Boulter after her big win over, Karolina Pliskova. He told the BBC, “Before we talk about my match, can we just talk about Katie Boulter today? I mean, she had a pretty good win herself.” Boulter also spoke about him in a 2023 interview with Tatler. She said:
“I couldn’t ask for any better, he’s the best support I’ve got. We’re on the same wavelength when it comes to our priorities, tennis is where we want to be and the rest will follow.”
Then came a big step. In December 2024, they shared their engagement news. They posted a picture with the ring and wrote, “We’ve been keeping a small secret.” Interestingly, just months before that, de Minaur had been asked about a possible proposal after a win over, Novak Djokovic. He said, “Jeez, putting me on the spot here. Yeah, it’s not in the cards just yet, not ruling it out. For the time being, I’m going to try to focus on playing tennis, and then we’ll think about the off-court activities.” Not long after, that “off-court” moment became real. Now, whether they are winning matches or facing tough losses, Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter continue to move forward together, calmly, simply, and in their own way.
