Aamir Khan and his wife, Kiran Rao, had left their fans shocked on July 3, 2021, when they had announced their separation. The once-in-love couple had tied the knot on December 28, 2005. The duo had welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, in 2011 via surrogacy. Now, Aamir and Kiran shared a joint message post announcing their divorce for their fans.

For those who don't know, Aamir and Kiran had met each other on the sets of Ashutosh Gowariker-directed, Lagaan in the year 2001. However, their romance brewed when Aamir was going through the legal process of separating from his first wife, Reena Dutta.
On July 4, 2021, Aamir and Kiran were seen together in a video wherein Aamir shared a message. Aamir said, "Ap logo ko acha nahi laga hoga, dukh bhi hua hoga, acha nahi laga hoga. Hum bas apko itna kehna chahte hai ki hum duno bahut khush hai or hum ek hi parivaar hai. Humare rishte mein change aaya hai, lekin hum duno ek dusre ke saath hi hai. On July 3, 2021, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced their divorce in a joint statement. It could be read as "In these 15 beautiful years together, we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect and love. Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives — no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other."

Aamir and Kiran's divorce statement had further revealed they have been planning it for quite some time. The duo had also revealed that they feel comfortable formalising living separately yet sharing their lives the way an extended family does.
The couple had concluded their statement by stating that they will remain devoted parents to their son Azad, who they will nurture and raise together. They will also continue to work as collaborators on films, Paani Foundation, and other projects that they feel passionate about.
