18-YO Hiker Was Found Dead After Going Missing For Eight Days, Was Initially Claimed To Be Alive

An 18-year-old, Lily Hooper, passed away days after she was reported missing from a solo hike. If the reports are to be believed, Lily Hooper left her home on August 12, 2026, and set out on a hike in Nattai National Park. Lily, who resided in Oakdale, New South Wales, Australia, didn't return home, prompting her family member to report her missing.

An extensive search operation began, which involved several agencies. Eight days later, the search operation ended as Lily's family was provided with the devastating news about her death. Lily's family initially thought that she was alive, having been given wrong information; however, later they were given the heartbreaking news. So, here's everything that happened.

Lily Hooper, who has been described as a skilled bushwalker, left her home eight days ago and went missing. Following the missing report and eventual search operation, on August 20, 2026, her vehicle was found near a walking trail on the “fairly rugged terrain” of Wanganderry Road in the western part of Nattai National Park. According to the authorities, while Lily was an experienced hiker, what supplies she had at the time couldn't be determined.

After her vehicle was discovered, the team could finally spot the 18-year-old, whose body was located in the bush, far from the car. The New South Wales police issued a statement and revealed that a woman was found in the bush, with half a bottle of water with her. It was initially announced that the woman was alive.

However, eight minutes later, the Premier of New South Wales, Christopher Minns, apologized for the mistake and clarified that the woman, who was found in the bush, was dead. According to The Guardian, Christopher Minns extended his apology for the mistake and offered his condolences to Lily's grieving family. Minns reportedly, in his statement, said:

"I’ve got some terrible news. I apologize… it seems as if the earlier advice was wrong. This is obviously devastating, and I’m profoundly sad for her family and for all those concerned. I apologize."

While the body is yet to be identified, it's believed to be that of Lily Hooper. Earlier, DI Benjamin Bowles revealed that there was no foul play in Lily's sudden disappearance. The coroner will be investigating her death, as reported. During a press conference on August 20, 2026, Southern Region Commander Joseph Cassar revealed that Lily's parents were kept informed about her at every step. "Within the 8 to 10 minutes we were able to give them an update which was a more accurate account of the discovery of the person we believe to be Lily. The only thing I can sincerely say is my absolute condolences go out to Lily's mum and dad. Every one of the investigators and searchers hoped for a more positive outcome. I can tell you the police in charge at the time that spoke to Lily's mum and dad certainly hoped for a better outcome. I can not turn the clock back."

What was the cause of Lily Hooper's passing?

While the 18-year-old's death has been confirmed, no report about her cause of death has been released as of now. Speaking on the same, Joseph Cassar said at the press conference that, as of now, the primary focus is on getting Lily out of the dense terrain and reuniting her with her family. Nothing as of now could be confirmed, including the reason or time of her death, and as per the commander, it's in the hands of the coroner.
