So without further ado, let’s get straight into the life of Ranveer’s actress-grandmother, Chand Burke.
Chand Burke was born on February 2, 1932, in a Christian family. Not much information about her parents and early childhood is available on the internet. However, one thing that is quite known is the fact that she was the sister of Samuel Martin Burke, who was an Indian Civil Service officer.
Talking about Chand Burke’s acting career, she made her debut in the film, Kahan Gaye (1946), which Maheshwari Productions produced. However, after the partition, Chand worked on several films which were made in Lahore. Courtesy of her beautiful dance, she got the title ‘the dancing lily of Punjab’. However, after the partition in 1947, Chand migrated to Bombay (now Mumbai), which had a major impact on her acting career.
After partition, Chand Burke was struggling to find work, and it was at that moment her work got the attention of iconic actor and filmmaker, Raj Kapoor. Her acting chops impressed him, and Raj Kapoor offered Chand her first-ever break in the Hindi film industry. Raj Kapoor cast the actress in the timeless classic, Boot Polish (1954), in which she played the character of ‘Baby Naaz’.

Not just in Hindi films, Chand Burke also worked in several Punjabi films during her career. She was one of the most famous actresses in the 40s, courtesy of her rich filmography. Some of Chand Burke’s most famous films include Apne Huye Paraye, Adalat, Lajwanti, Basant Bahar, Dushman, Shravan Kumar, Kahin Din Kahin Raat, and many more.
Moving on to Chand Burke’s personal life, the iconic actress got married to famous filmmaker, Niranjan. However, after some years of their married life, the two drifted apart due to some irreconcilable issues. It was in 1954 when Chand and Niranjan got divorced and ended all ties.

After ending her first marriage with the director, Niranjan, Chand Burke gave love another chance in her life. The actress met renowned businessman, Sundar Singh Bhavnani, and the two instantly hit off. It was in 1955 Chand and Sundar got married. The couple welcomed two kids, Tonya and Jagjit. While there’s not much info about Tonya, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani followed in his father's footsteps and became an entrepreneur.
Jagjit Singh Bhavnani is married to Anju Bhavnani, and they are parents of Bollywood actor, Ranveer Singh and Ritika Bhavnani, who prefers to stay away from the media limelight. Well, Ranveer’s deep connection with the film fraternity speaks volumes about his family background. No doubt, acting was in his veins right from the beginning. For the uninitiated, it was on December 28, 2008, at the age of 76, when Chand Burke passed away.
